Essentially Lupus is the progenitor of wolves that evolved into human like people and looks like Wolverine but much bigger and wears a massive coat.

With X-23, firstly people, who've only seen the film, aren't going to know that the all-new, all-female Wolverine is X-23, and therefore won't buy it on that basis.
