Alot of top complaints I've also seen are how the humans on the show are very unengaging. They all just mostly deal with the fact there are space alien gems in their town and how their artifacts are scattered around the place. We never see any humans take active interest in it. One of the original ideas for the Mayor was that he was supposed to be against the Gems and view them as menaces which would have been a hell of alot more interesting than the beta politician they made him. A human enemy faction would add some flair to this series.

But when you've got writers who are bordering (or are) tumblrinas then you know in their writing nothing is more important than shipping and FEELINGS.

You know why Avatar the Last Air Bender was such a Good show. Just about every episode was Relevant. I can't really think of any filler episodes. They had a plan for a 3 season show and then they just made the fucking show and it was Great.

Steven Universe is like the exact opposite of that. It's like they have enough story for 1 season but they stretching it out to like 7 seasons.

Worldbuilding really fleshes out a story and gives a good sense of what's at stake, while introducing characters that are not only interesting in their own right, but tell us more about our protagonists.
So far, the only thing worldbuilding in SU has done is made me know about a bunch of unlikeable assholes that will die if the gems fail, whom I honestly wouldn't care about if they did die.

The filler problem is actually far worse when you realize the format they've got. 11 Minute episodes and they decide to use most of them on background characters and filler.

They don't even get full episodes and yet they still waste their time on this shit. Korra had the same problem. Mike and Byran were so brilliant that even when they thought they were only making a mini-series with a limited number of episodes, they still dedicated most of them to a romance subplot and then revealed and resolved the villain in the last 15 minutes of the last episode.

What would happen in a free market is that the executives would new the creators just as much as the creators would need the executives, except this time, the executives would be in no position to withhold the creators' ideas from them, and should they try to fuck over the creators, the creators can continue working on their shows with any competing network. Also, TVOD runs on the same fundamental principle of profit as other forms of media, and it's way more profitable. It's time we stopped giving television a special treatment.
