American Tokusatsu

I'd like to ask all of you, what would you do if you could make an American tokusatsu like comic or cartoon? Live action too if you really want to be faithful. It can be completely original or in the spirit of Power Rangers and revamping an existing franchise. It can be serious, mildly comedic, or just plain silly like Aquabats. Or maybe you'd like to make your own American Godzilla sort of franchise. However you want. I'd like to hear your ideas.

The Aquabats deserve a third season and some decent action figures

The problem is which age group to target. I can't see a kids show doing well because all they seem to care about is Power Rangers.

I would love to see an adult version done. Take a cue from Kamen Rider Drive and focus on either one or a small team of cops that uncover a plot device that makes users superhuman or monstrous like the Gaia Memories of Kamen Rider W. They find a way to use them without succumbing to the side effects and try to stop the source of these things. If it's treated as a superhero-style show instead of overtly inspired by/based on tokusatsu it could go over well. Shows like Garo and Amazons (and to a lesser extent things like Shougeki Gouraigan) are proof adult-themed shows like this can work. You just have to find the right hook and audience for it.

If you make something similar in style, you could probably get a decently successful Power Rangers type show that isn't just a cheap patchwork. Probably have to put in on Netflix though.

With adult like shows, you get the normal fag crowd that expects shit like Daredevil or Flash. They'd either be blown away by something like Kamen Rider Amazons or just think it was stupid because it doesn't appeal to their plain expectations. They'd instantly hate live action Garo. No doubt there.

I was thinking adult comedy and then I realized that is pretty much what Danger 5 was.

Samurai Flamenco had a good thing going until King Torture and his underlings showed up. I'd like to see a series carry that on.

I know I shouldn't, but I still hope they'll get some sort of deal with a streaming service.

Oh shit i forgot about that, is it still going?

Was it one of those shows that was going well but then the villain shows up and it all falls apart?

I'd love a kamen rider type show following in the spirit of kabuto.

I'd probably set it up that every country has their own kamen rider that works in conjunction with their military and how skirmishes between riders is basically two sides allowing gladiatorial combat to decide the outcome.

I'd start off the series with a good old American Boy piloting 'Stars' and slowly becoming disillusioned with how often he is sent in to impose American will on foreign nations. Then have the guy in the suit replaced by an amoral shit who delights in it while the all American takes a side character roll until he finds the USA spends so much on the military that it has another unit 'Stripes'

I dunno what every nations rider would be named, but I know Britain's would be Big Ben.

So basically Kamen Rider Hetalia with Riders fighting to settle conflicts between nations? Certainly something different and ambitious. I don't think there's been a Rider show that's dealt this heavily into politics. But what about the all encompassing enemy that every nation's Rider has to fight? I'd imagine even then the Nation Riders would be unable to put aside their differences to work together.

Pretty much, though it was more than just that. The concept behind the series was that you had a male model, who ended up with more money than he knew what to do with, started moonlighting as a tokusatsu hero because of his love for the genre growing up. The show then builds upon that buy growing the cast of characters that happen to surround him. And, the kicker to the series was that it was all based in reality.

Then King Toture appeared and immediately dropped the series down a number of steps because the show did just become another, regular tokusatsu show. And, then I really stopped watching when the series had his former hero (Who's honesty an ass) reveal about him founding some secret tokusatsu organization to fight off the next villian, and that wasm't even half-way through the show.

So basically just took itself too seriously and made the show into something it wasn't? That's a shame.

The ultimate villain would be one of the companies that makes the riders, after it is revealed that they've spent most of the series manipulating things to the point they can mass produced drone riders and are about to take over the world.

At least the opening song is great.

Anyway, given access to the copyright, I'd just straight up do The Avengers (including Spidey and Ant Man from the off) against a ridiculous monster of the week, with the reset button pushed in nearly every episode.
Or, if I wanted to Britishise it, a team up of the few-and-far-between British comics superheroes, like King Cobra and X-Bow (or The Claw and Dollman). Or thier children and grandchildren, anyway. They'd be led by Sexton Blake, who stopped ageing in the early 20th century, somehow. At least three of the big bads would be equally ageless and have been fighting him for a century.
Alternatively, a remake of the old (and, even through rose tinted spectacles, rather guff) British series The Champions. Only with understated costumes instead of just ordinary clothes. And some actual location shooting, not "jungles" that are painfully obviously a very small studio. I'd keep the origin and powers the same (essentially, they have peak human abilities in all areas, fast as the fastest sprinter while also having the stamina of the best marathon runner, strength of the best weightlifter etc), but gradually let thier boss in on the secret.

So basically Yggdrasil and their Kurokage soldiers?

Sorry, it's been a while, but given the context yes.

I was thinking the plan could start with 'terrorist nation x' with a small mystery of where the funding is coming from sparking the American rider to start globe trotting to track it down, with increasing pressure to return to the eternal conflict in buttfuckistan. That gives you a reason to see the other riders and stress the American riders relationship with leadership enough they replace him with the companies suggested pick. Then you basically have America going around to different nations as big dick swinging og starting fights over trade deals and consolidating power as the previous rider is going around trying to put out the fires before he gets back in the game with the back up rider.

From thwere I'm not really sure where to take it, but I definitely would love to have the last big bad just be a buisness man who's real 'power' is just infinite top quality rider suits he can transfer between when they get scratched.

I can see some potential with it. Keep working on it.

I was going ask if you meant the NRA safety mascot, but he'd be pretty awesome for a tokusatsu series.

The story goes batshit fucking off-the-rails insane. >>793517's description isn't right. It's a really bizarre show.

Rider, Ranger, or it's own franchise?

Cure

If I were to make my own Tokusatsu, I'd make it for a teen/young adult audience, make it as cheesy as possible while not cheap, and just steal aspects of plot from different Kamen and Sentai series.
100% filmed in NZ to get those sweet, sweet grants.

Oh, and I'd be sure to make sure there's a bunch of scenes that are perfect as reaction image fodder, then screencap them and use them all the time so people ask where they're from and watch my show :^)

Nope.
It was funded by the SBS, which is Australia's shitty diversity gubment funded channel. Only good for the porn doccos they show.

They funded two seasons. First was amazing, second was put into the 80s and did the synthwave/cop-film style for a bit and just wasn't as great.
Also, Pierre became black for some reason.

I was to fug Elsa.

Fun fact, that image with the guy looking into a room a shaking his head in a circle in shock is from a movie called Italian Spiderman. Made by the guy guys as Danger 5.
It has a 70s aesthetic and does the "everyone speaks different languages" thing as well.

Nah, I meant the guy who wanted to ski at the Olympics, but wasn't good enough, so switched to ski jumping, because no other Brit was entering so he qualified by default, then came last by about 50 points.
But I'd really wanted to say "Fast Eddie", which I thought was his alternative nickname and also the nickname of a mentally ill guy who became a meme in 70's Britain. But actually "Fast Eddie" was a guitarist in Motorhead, and the mentally ill guy was called Joey Deacon.

Joey Deacon wasn't mentally ill, he had normal intelligence and cerebral palsy.

Fast Eddie is also an Aragonian Telvanni Mouth

That's some nice looking designs

What's the difference?

Gaim has a lot of good designs despite it's silly theme.

fuck off

Its the Walmart of images user, nothing you can do.

Spoiler alert: I have no idea what I'm doing.

For some reason the moon's been full, huge, and in the night sky for a solid month now. And lately strange crimes have been taking place under the cover of night. The park has been completely trashed more than once, a local fast food place's meat storage was cleared out in a single night, and numerous people found injured with no memory of how they got there or what gave them the injuries. And there have been rumors of a strange beast roaming the streets at night.

One guy, ISNH, comes home to find his house broken into and the sounds of someone shuffling in his kitchen. He tries to catch the burglar (because headstrong MC syndrome) and gets immediately floored by a woman wearing nothing but rags. She tells him that the weird crimes are the result of monsters being summoned from another world, and that he's being forceably enlisted to help fight them. ALSO SHE'S A FUCKING WEREWOLF!. That's where all the meat's gone.

One clumsy bite and transformation later, he's a costumed superhero with a werewolf theme.

The main bad guy is actually a salaryman that dabbled in the occult until he accidentally summoned a demon. He promptly ignored everything that has/is everything and went back to his office job. The demons summoned are based on different classic horror movie tropes, with his commander being one of the later ones when she finally goes full werewolf as he puts together clues that lead him to the summoner to finally put a stop to him.

A couple of other heros join in eventually. One represents the hero of cosmic horror stories and has abilities roughly based on the angular magic from Dreams in the Witch House. He's the calm, if paranoid, member of the trio.
The other has abilities based on modern slasher films tries to play up how much of a bad boy he is, but fails so hard it drifts into the area of comedy.

The show follows the usual monster-of-the-week episode, leading up to the season finale where the salaryman finally puts some of his power to use to defeat the last of the monsters, leading to his sacrifice to break the circle.

Needs a little polishing but I can dig it. I'm a diehard fan of supernatural occult stuff and a tokusatsu like hero with those themes sounds amazing to me. Especially a werewolf themed hero. Kamen Rider kinda did that twice but both were kinda shit and one of them only had the werewolf aspect as an alternate form. The real closest thing to your idea design wise would be Garo.

Garo looks pretty cool. Is it a KR series or something different?

Something different. Mystical Knight hunts man eating demons called Horrors.

Has beautiful costumes and pretty nice effects.

in season 1 he was "vaguely european"
in season 2 he was not so vaguely ethnic

also it was a play on the 1980s tendency to cast black actors into an otherwise predominantly white show

Kamen Rider-style show in which our hero is a guy who would be the lancer in any other show. And he wears this fucking helmet

baseball bat optional

did I say the bat was optional? I has missed the sword hidden inside. That bat is mandatory

>No mention of Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog

Huh.

What's this cool guy's story?

Alright I'll go hunt down some episodes. Because that is indeed a beautiful costume.

You can go to kissasian if you wanna stream the series. Be warned that there's multiple so you should look up the wiki guide on which is which.

Huh?

Even Saban doesn't want to remember that.

I hate to say, Im loving the design.

Fuck, well at least I can catch up now.
Wat?

How many Masked Rider shows are out there?

For a moment I misread this thread as "American Tonkatsu"

About 15 in the Showa era. Then about 18 in the Heisei Era right now now. Then there's a spinoff show that's kind of but not really a reboot/re-imagining of a Showa era Rider. Along with two movies that reboot the classic 3 Riders but those were there own thing.

Wasnt that American Kamen Rider alright?

Dragon Warrior or something if I recall

I know that feel, user.

...

Masked Rider and Dragon Warrior

Short answer? No. Long answer? Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

That looks delicious.

Just ignore him.

Can TKS be considered TKS even if animated?
If not what is this thread doing here?
Is it because Holla Forums is shit?

It totally can be. I get that Tokusatsu refers to a special filming type but it's the best wording we got for the genre idea. So yeah it can be done. Just hasn't really been done much yet. Garo the animation and maybe 'Tiger and Bunny' can be considered examples of this. Also Samurai Flamenco. Maybe even Zetman too.

It's because /m/ is dead.

Personal boards was a mistake.
I want 4chan and Holla Forums to crash into another and see what survives.

Is this Tokusatsu??

No.

Why not?
Cuantious special effects, suits silly looking and edgy inside.
Kinda fits in tokusatsu.

No… just… no. Tokusatsu in this sense does not encompass western capes.

/m/ was a legacy board ya fucking refugee.

Then I suppose Toei Spiderman can't be considered tokusatsu, and if it is, then you can fit all of CW DC series here.

Japanese Spider-man fits. Though only because it's such a massive departure from the source material. The CW shows definitely don't fit.

It might be shit tks, but is still tks.
Like a "Orange, grapefruit, lemon, apple" thing.
One might not fit but is still a fruit.
Or an shitty token teammate.

it's actually just a street legal custom motorcycle helmet halfchan found several years ago. /m/ had a good time talking about it iirc

I disagree heavily. I see what you mean but it just doesn't fit into the idea or themes of a toku show.

So, no story, just a cool helmet and figure?

Then what makes a toku show?
If you're so sure then it must be something objective.

Fine, what about Transformers?

That's mecha.

Alright, to be fair, Japan uses it as all encompassing for a show or movie with lots of effects. But in this context we're talking about henshin. Heroes that transform into they're powered personas to fight evil. Closest thing the west for animation equivalent would be something like 'Super Robot Money Team Hyperforce Go!'. Has the henshin themes as well as the super sentai themes of color courted heroes in a mech fighting monsters. The purpose here is to discuss ideas and possibilities for cartoons or comics of that nature.

How about Megas xlr?

Mecha but does have the monster of the week, mostly literal monsters, thing that a lot of toku shows do. So it sorta counts.

?

She doesn't transforms.

Also, am I the only one who thinks that Jake Long secons style was better?

Unfortunately, those shows do sort of count as well.

Jake Long and Danny Phantom's second seasons we're decent and the last two seasons of the original B10 were good.

Never settle for mediocrity, user.

I never settle, I just aknowledge the good things in it, I get mad at the bad things but I never let them eclipse the other stuff, after all a series only really has failed when it cannot entertain you despite you letting them entertain you.

Hmm hmm fair enough.

What about Team of Super Evil?

Solid

Definitely not.

Oh well.

Did it not sell well? Because that show was my jam as a kid. Armor, dragons, monsters, it all seemed cool.

It was not well received with the fact it got almost all of it's mythology wrong and was just kinda dumb.

It got pretty stupid.

How bad was it?

Would 60's Batman would?

if you made this show today SJWs would go REEEEEEEEEEEE

For any specific reason?

Oh dear. Remember any examples?

the green one is a black kid than can run super fast, one of the villains is a slender woman in a leotard with a heavy Russian accent, and comic book fans are shown in a positive light on the show. just to name a few.

Maybe?

Can Batman '66 be considered Toku? It shares a lot of the elements with the genre.

I'd say not really. How many effects did it really have beyond the punch effects?

I don't remember but some user told me a lot of the irish audience bashed it hard because so much celtic myth was completely wrong. Maybe he's still here somewhere to explain.

Define "effects", because it had stuff like colored smoke and explosions, along with numerous visual overlays.

I'd say it's effects budget was beyond that of the first Kamen Rider series.

Dont forget to count inflation.

Whos the guy in the chrome

It's a shame this form of live action super heroes didn't evolve. We could have gotten commedies with god tier action and capes… then again, it could have just become politics/social commentary loosely disguised as quirky humor like we see so often now of days.

I'd say you can get your fix with that from Kamen Rider but it's not primarily comedic. The seasons that are are usually very very shit. I would love to see more golden age era or just in general fun live action cape shows in America that aren't shit. Looking at the CW shit over there. Yes even Flash. I think if the big two never got this far, we could've gotten way better heroes nowadays that aren't just cheap products/brands or political soapboxes. If only.

They did in some regards but it doesn't sell well.

Mr.Freeze?

That's Mr. Freeze. Go watch the show, newfag.

Actually, scratch that. Don't watch Otto Priminger Mr. Freeze episodes. He's awful. Watch the George Sanders or Eli Wallach Mr. Freezes instead.

Sorry its been awhile.

We need more show like Legends of Tomorow. silly fun with serious threats.

But they need to be actually good and not just okay or attached to the big two.

I would dare too say that Legends is becoming a legitimately good show. The past few episodes have really started having fun with the time travel concept, and the writing is improving at a steady rate. The George Lucas episode was actually really dope.

Yeah I have a hard time believing you. I've seen Arrow and Flash. The CW DC show qualities are laughably bad. Maybe Legends is different now but I very much doubt it's a top tier show whatsoever.

At this point I'd say Legends is better than the other two. Flash and Arrow are usually dragged down by romance subplots and shit, while in Legends there's only ONE currently. If you never liked Flash/Arrow in the first place, though, you probably still won't like Legends, but if it continues it's rate of improvement, the season 3 will actually be really good.

Writing could be better.

Hopefully.

I think you're confusing Beetleborgs with Mystic Knights.

Look back the previous comments and you'll realize we're talking about Mystic Knights. You're the only one confused here.

No, you mean King Arthur and the Knights of Justice.

What?

...

Not with that attitude.

im too old

Got any video references?

Christ, New Zealand writers can't write for shit.

What? it's the same writers In Space era
