Each string that Assange tweeted was 64 hex characters. Each hex character represents 4 bits. 64 times 4 is 256, which is an AES256 key length.

It's also the output word size of SHA256, which is a common choice for plaintext key to cypher key conversion.

So yes, the Tweets could contain decryption keys or they could be file checksums or something else. We won't know until we have the data they're supposed to pair with.

Since integrity of the data they distribute is their main advantage, and attacking that integrity is the attack against them that makes the most sense, it's simply a good idea to ensure that the data can be verified even if it must be smuggled around in a sea of fakes.
