I usually fetch web pages from other sites by sending mail to a program (see git://git.gnu.org/womb/hacks.git) that fetches them, much like wget, and then mails them back to me. Then I look at them using a web browser, unless it is easy to see the text in the HTML page directly. I usually try lynx first, then a graphical browser if the page needs it (using konqueror, which won't fetch from other sites in such a situation).

Question from someone who does not know how browsers work: why is it so hard to make a new browser? I understand that HTML, CSS, and Javascript engines are hard, but given those as separate libraries, how hard would it be to tied them together into a new browser instead of making the millionth fork of Firefox? Are those engines tied too closely to the existing browsers?
HTML parsing isn't too hard, but the issue is displaying it, especially on non-character-based screens (i.e. anything using a graphical interface instead of a terminal), since you have to calculate the optimal position and size of each element based on the neighbour elements, the parent, the children, and some other properties like font size
Then there is CSS, which adds to the difficulties of displaying elements a bunch of semantics, like animations, but even more simply the fact that some elements might change their measurements after the DOM is built (e.g. different stylesheet for mobile and desktop), so you have to find an efficient way to recalculate the optimal position and size of each element, 60 frames per second at least
And then javascript appeared. Now it's not really the fact that some elements might appear, disappear, change position, parent, children, and some other properties, at any time (you already have an optimized engine built for CSS), but now you have to implements a whole runtime for an interpreted language that can't be compiled to bytecode, and you have to make it fast (slow loading pages, anyone?)
Not to mention, the javascript runtime is massive and full of quirks caused by legacy
Of course, this is only the front end, you also have to consider the back end: when a user visit a page, do you get it from the network, or do you use a cached version to reduce network usage and speed up displaying? Same for images.
But more importantly, you have to properly manage HTTP, be it sessions, redirects, or certificate issues for HTTPS
That's what it takes to build a browser. And I'm barely scraping the surface, there's a lot more going on behind the scenes

The hard part is implementing the zillion compatibility hacks for non-standard-compliant websites, which make up something like ¾ of the web. You need to reimplement every quirk and bug of every version of every major browser released in the last 15 years, and then implement bullet-proof heuristics to choose which of those bugs to enable on which site. Make it anywhere short of perfect and users start whining that your browser is broken because muh jewflix/kikebook/whatever doesn't work and it's your fault because it works on every other browser.
