Nope. Syria is more complicated than that. It's serving as the line in the sand for multiple reasons. Firstly if a pipeline is established between Saudi Arabia and Europe (route requires Syria being under U.S puppet control to secure it), Russia's gas/oil export market collapses and their economy goes with it. Second it's a strategically important location for Russian presence in the Middle East and serves as an access point to the Mediterranean. Finally, Iran is a key ally of theirs (and China's) in the region, if Syria falls Iran is immediately next. Losing Iran means they lose a key player in the Middle East and the U.S dominates.

In fact I'd argue the move on Crimea was in anticipation to events brewing in Syria, as well as ensuring Ukraine doesn't cut off strategic access to the Black Sea.
