When I watched it during the huge butthurt on half Holla Forums I could only identify the mystical elements and tropes from DnD as appealing to me. The cartoon was ok but they left a lot of world building bait out there and I saw the community running wild with it.

It would definitely be interesting. The market was so starved for this sort of thing that it created an entire culture off one show that accidentally hit the formula. You have to wonder what would happen if somebody went in knowing what they were doing and targeted lonely guys with their cartoon. I don't think that's the problem. First, you don't have to follow the anime archetype pattern to make waifubait. Overwatch dabbled in this to great success without using dere types. Second, to an extent the archetypes just represent a way of classifying what exists. Consider the classic romance novel protagonist. She generally starts out disliking the male lead and then gradually warms up to him over the course of the story. That's basically tsundere even if none of the pudgy middle-aged women, ripped gay men, or 19th century old maidens who write the things have ever heard of the term.

Yeah, one of the biggest things that got me into pon was the fact that it was, and still is, the only high fantasy show out… period. No mixed genera, no using fantasy as a vehicle to do another type of show, it's High Fantasy. Period..

Of course one of the big things that got me into it was that I remembered the original series. Which was by all rights a DnD campaign. So after Hasbro was done shitting itself with 'boys and gossip' stage and 'cheap baby shit' and got back to that I was willing to give it a watch again.

Let's also remember what a BLEAK AS FUCK time 2010 was in animation. Aside from the few gems that always sneak in it was a time where things were being completely ravaged by shitty looking tweens and Johnny Test ruled the land with an iron fist as far as production was concerned. If you say nothing else of MLP the crew was ingenious in creating an art style that animates extremely well with the toolset they were using and can be pushed to much higher limits than any of the shit on Cartoon Network even today. I'll even give it credit for being the first thing in years that was tolerable with an actual color pallet. I can tell you after playing countless brown/bloom games I was dying for something with a pink or purple in it.

To be entirely honest there was also the mockery. The show came out when 'bro' culture was at the peak of its intollerability. Yeah, think of identity politics right now and how a cartoon that is red-pilled as fuck coming out that was good enough quality wise that you couldn't just dismiss someones enjoyment of it. That was what it was like when FIM came out. Hell that's half the reason the term 'Brony' exists. In many of the early threads it was just people making fun of the overly macho 'bro' behavior those douchebags got over things like Halo and Boondock Saints and applied it to a show with colorful horses.

Steven Universe just looks like shit so I've never watched it. Sounds like a worthless going nowhere shonen formula with 'progressive' applied as a lazy coat of paint as an afterthought if you ask me.

MLP got popular because it was a high fantasy adventure cartoon with a likable cast of archetypal but likable characters going on adventures. It came out at a time when cartoons were deader than dead, and managed to be stunning in terms of sheer quality due to the sheer virtue of existing alongside the likes of Johnny Test.

I liked it a lot because of the fantasy elements, and the actually fairly solid writing that pervades a decent chunk of the series. Also the characters are easy to waifu, which helped inflate it's popularity amongst the socially awkward nerds of the internet. MLP's agenda pushing is also infinitely less grating, and not really all that feminist in the new-age definition of the term. If you really stretch I guess you could say that Applejack and Rainbow Dash are feminist characters because they're tough characters who aren't conventionally female. But even then, you've also got characters like Rarity and Fluttershy, who are very traditionally feminine, who are pretty much just as important and get just as much, if not more, screen time. It also shat all over communist ideals of everybody being equal, and it doesn't pretend to be darker or edgier than it really needs to be to carry the plot of the season forward. Which serves it well, unlike SU, whose attempts at being 'mature' come off in harsh contrast to the lovey dovey cutesy atmosphere ninety percent of the show attempts to portray.

Steven Universe appeals to a different crowd entirely. At first, back before it went downhill and started shoving the Tumblr shit full-tilt down everyone's throats, there was a bit of overlap between the two groups. People could waifu one of the mom squad, they were all kind of likable at first, and it was a fairly interesting setting.

Now, however, it's been revealed that the entirety of the cast are a bunch of short-tempered, hateful, spiteful, incompetent, selfish, dyke cunts. All of the deep lore is pretty much just a bog standard evil alien empire thing, and the moral standard of the show has morphed from being about conquering evil with love I guess to pushing whatever uncomfortable virtue signal Sugar and company feel like they need to harp on about.

So it's like this

MLP: Appeals to neckbeards with an appreciation for fantasy and waifus

SU: Appeals to tumblrtards who want to see their political agendas get pushed on little children.

They're both groups comprised of teens and adults, but they're pretty different teens and adults at the end of the day. The two shows attained popularity using similar methods, but not altogether identical.
