Microsoft patches Windows XP to fight the WannaCrypt ransomware attacks

Not By Brian Fagioli

Microsoft stopped supporting Windows XP back in 2014, but today it releases one more security update for the ancient OS.

The software giant is taking this "highly unusual" step to fight back against the WannaCrypt ransomware cyber attacks that have so far hit nearly 100 countries around the world. And XP is not the only unsupported system receiving this patch.

More than 45,000 WannaCrypt attacks have been recorded around the world, including in the UK, US, Russia, Ukraine, India, China, Italy, Spain, and Egypt. The malware was part of a cache of NSA 'cyber weapons' released in April by hacking group TheShadowBrokers.

Microsoft released a patch in March to protect against the flaw the attack was exploiting, but only supported versions of Windows received it. However, the WannaCrypt ransomware worm has been found to be spreading by targeting out-of-date systems, prompting Microsoft to now make the security update available for all platforms, including those receiving custom support only -- Windows XP, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2003. It’s available for download here.

Phillip Misner, Principal Security Group Manager Microsoft Security Response Center explains, "This decision was made based on an assessment of this situation, with the principle of protecting our customer ecosystem overall, firmly in mind."

Microsoft takes every opportunity to promote Windows 10, and the security benefits of switching to the newest operating system, and this is a good example of why. As a post on TechNet points out: "The exploit code used by WannaCrypt was designed to work only against unpatched Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 (or earlier OS) systems, so Windows 10 PCs are not affected by this attack."

Jerking off laughing.
They knew about the exploit, they just didn't patch it until they found out the NSA was hacked and their tools would be used outside of the government.

us military still use windows xp including undercover agents all over the world. they receive private patches for their devices that doesn't normally get into the public

Is that like sequel, but a trilogy?

obviously you should have told your grandmother to install gentoo, jeez

Nah, it's like MySQL but triple the amount of autism.

It's a fork of ubuntu it removes every binary blob and non-free shit.
trisquel.info
Very simple distro but doesn't include shit like Mint does or ubuntu does.
Mint especially installs a lot of shit compared to ubuntu.
You can download Trisquel 7 but it's a bit out dated since it was made out of version 14.04 of ubuntu.
But there the 8 version that was made
jenkins.trisquel.info/makeiso/iso/
It's still in alpha but works pretty gud.

aka Chinese cover agents and third world country

Why is that bad again, and why does that make trisquel better?
It's not like mint installs microsoft store apps, or apple stuff. Everything mint installs is free and open source software from the online repositories (that anyone can check), for example libre office.

Besides removing CIA Nigger trash and corporate gay traps ?
In my experience the interface of Trisquel was always more intuitive than Mint or Gnome.
It uses MATE but a slightly modified version of it that makes it very comfy for old windows users.
No not everything is free/libre software.
Kernel Binary blobs (understandable for hardware), shit like adobe flash player, the non-free winrar libraries, non-free codec, non free-printer drivers etc...
Mint is the Jewish cum bucket of proprietary software.
Even Ubuntu is less cum soaked than that.

trisquel so cool
pronounced: trees-quail

Mint includes flash by default last I checked, nothing to worry about.

install bsd

Am I OK if I don't have SMB1 on my computer?

t. Retard Mongoloid

If you have windows you have it by default, it's easy to disable. If you have win7 you can use these:
smb.bat (execute as admin)
SC.exe config lanmanworkstation depend= mrxsmb20/bowser/nsiSC.exe config mrxsmb10 start= disabledset /p temp="Check for success in both commands"
smb.reg
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\LanmanServer\Parameters]"SMB1"=dword:00000000
Made these myself

Forgot to say you need to use both

Once again, DOS is not affected. Feels good man.

The patch was available long before this. Maybe not for the "freeter" XP users, but MS support old versions for huge money, so the real ransomware practically isn't the wcry.

tfw fell for the Windows 7 meme

Stopped reading there, friendo~

This "patch" probably didn't fix shit and just strengthened the botnet.

Thank you OP.

This is only an issue to begin with because the enterprise world forces Microsoft to keep SMB in Windows since they can't be bothered to live in the 21st century.

WannaCrypt is not the only ransomware in existence. And most ransomware is installed because of the user's stupidity.

Microsoft still supports Windows XP if you're willing to pay for it.

Is a fagloli the equivalent of a shota trap?

Tell her to backup her work.

this CIA nigga serious

Good advice. LibreOffice has a setting to keep backups of recently saved file versions that isn't on by default.
