Build a bridge with your VPN. Learn how all the "about:config" setting in TorBrowser work. Then DON'T. Go all the way back to the begining and learn it all again via another info source. Order of precident: Tor button settings, Preferences, NoScript settings, about:config.
Also, find and download all the manuals and how-tos for all the stuff that comes w/ tails and use an admin pw to make sure you have updated all the packages. After all that leaning, you'll know just enough to live in fear long enough to eventually find the good forums and guides. NotEvil is ur friend.

Tor isn't a honeypot per se, but it was a Department of the Navy and Ivy League Colab for a long time. Now that it and it's source code are publicly available, the Tor Project has no choice but to play it legit, or risk being labeled as narcs. That's a death sentence in the world of real programmers and sys admins. People who run Tor exit nodes are a different story though. Many, especially in NATO countries are compromized. Hence all the learning and relearning I mentioned. It's not a honeypot, it's more like "just enough rope to hang yourself with". Education really is the key. It's like two spies at a night club: Don't give me a (provable) reason and all's good. If everything about Onions was compromised, it would take decades and millions of cop hours to sort all the data just to get probable cause warrants. Take it slow, learn, and hedge your bet with legit content.

Tor -> VPN is considered the golden standard. The VPN only sees a tor exit node, the exit node can't read your traffic cause it's encrypted.

I've been a customer of theirs since they were just getting started, and my rate is locked in. Company is based in Panama, claim to not keep logs, 2048 bit encryption, etc

not sure, first of all your ISP will see Tor traffic which is considered more suspicious than VPN traffic. And then I hope you didn't reveal your identity to that VPN and never logged in to it without tor because otherwise you fucked up.
