Which web browser is least shit? Excepting Tor browser and wget

I use Chromium atm. Is it bad? Why?

On a more serious note though. Brave and Qupzilla are good.

Oh great, a browser thread!

IT'S ANOTHER BROWSER THREAD

Microsoft Edge™

Personal experience from a month permanently moved to Linux:

Pale Moon works most of the time. No video.

SJWFox and Chromium is botnet, but is the only thing that reliably works with YouTube, Twitch, NetFlix, Hulu, and Crunchyroll.

Everything else is a clone that cannibalizes the same 2 or 3 code bases with no good features\addons.

links2. It's not perfect, but it's the "least worst". I plan on switching to qutebrowser+qtwebkit-ng soon, though.

Someone is beginning to ask the good questions.
Icecat.

vs
Can anyone recommend a "best of both worlds" browser?

Almost everything works with HTML5 video now, it's just matter of getting it to play in your video player of choice or opening the URL in it. Some videos played for me though in Pale Moon, but not all.

It's just as bad as Firefox once you open more than 2 tabs.

GNU/Linux*

lwn.net/Articles/648392/
tl;dr shady trash, downloaded binary that was listening to your microphone

who knows what may come next

Please tell me more

qutebrowser if you don't mind not having addons

Ok then what's one with good performance?

I'd settle for a version of SJfox that didn't leak memory up to two gigabytes everywhere, no matter what you try.

There's a problem with your extensions or profile. I'm using Firefox right now and I don't notice any leaking.

It's a literal fresh install from linux mint.

I use Nightly for preferance, and that bloats like dobson too, but it's also got a buttload of extensions too.

Kill yourself adware shill.

I'm on Pale Moon myself.

How is Konqueror doing anyway?

Are you retarded?

It's a Holla Forums LARPer, pay no mind to them.

I use Alpine. Sod off GNUmale.

No browser really has performance right now. They've all become bloated pieces of shit.

The only browsers that have performance are older, insecure versions of current browsers.

unusable

GNU ICECAT AND UNGOOGLED CHROMIUM ARE THE ONLY BROWSERS ANYONE SHOULD BE USING ON ANY OS

Work on my machine.

...

That's because everyone writes it as Pale Moon, and you should as well.

You suck at your job shill, consider suicide

How is palemoon?
I like opera becouse its embedded vpn feature

The waterfox team are considering making a new browser.

all browsers are shit
the small ones have no addons / aren't compatible with the addons I like, the big ones are bloated pieces of shit that track your every step, sending your profile to NASA and ad-companies

Personally I run firefucks, because tree style tabs, tab groups and vimperator. Once they stop support for proper addons later this year, I might switch to chromium. It's even worse and less customizable, but at least it doesn't leak memory quite as badly

you should just search for "Pale" or "Moon" too, because some people write it with the space in the middle and others don't, searching either of those words will probably lead to you the palemoon using anons if you're that needy of emotional support for your choice of browser i use PM too, it gives me trouble occasionally for things like streams, it just crashes

all things considered, if firefox is removing features now because they're cucks who want the chrome audience, then palemoon is pretty good.

bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=427186

There is no such thing as an ungoogled Chromium.

is there really no thread here about pulseaudio being a hard dependency in firefox 52+ here?

lol

Fucking nigger

dillo

qupzilla, I miss umatrix though.

RETARDED CONCEPT

Iridium

no such thing

I want : no botnet
I get : shit performance

I want : good performance
I get : botnet

I want : good performance + no botnet
I get : no support, limited features

I want : performance + no botnet + support
I get : nothing, doesnt exist.

I try to use qutebrowser, but i have yet to find a way to implement an element-removing adblocker, it ships with a host file based adblock but i block all those hosts and more at my router (i run pfsense) so having one on my browser is pointless and im still left with giant ugly boxes where ads would be.

try qupzilla konqueror

Firefox is the best. Chromium doesn't give you an option to never remember history. Instead, you have to use private browsing mode. I'm lazy and I don't want to manually enter private mode every time I open the browser. Firefox also has better extensions and a better, more natural user interface. The only thing Chromium is better with is battery and speed, and not by much either. Firefox is superior in every other way. This includes privacy, which is why the Tor browser is not Chrome based.

if it weren't for its add-ons, no one would use that piece of shit

All the "web" stuff (browsers, web pages) are in a very sad state right now.
Browsers are bloated and botnet, web sites require the loading of a 1000 different scripts from a 100000 different sources just to show a simple page, everything is pure cancer.
Kinda reminds me the beginning of the 2000s when Internet Exploder 5.5/6.0 was the most used piece of shit out there and almost every single site required it to display the pages "correctly", that means doing hacks outside of the standards that just fucked up everything, then out of nowhere in the middle of the 2000s Firefox came to save the web and purge the cancer. It's sad how even mozilla had become part of the cancer now.

well, what do you think?

Thanks mate, is chrominium any good?

Cyberfox my goy

Unless Vivaldi is using your system to carry out DDoS attacks or bitcoin mining, no it is not botnet.

it's Chrome with even less settings available, seriously, you have to brwose the forum to learn how to disable basic shit.

Everything that tries to be modern web compliant is going to be shit. You might as well be looking for a virgin in a whorehouse.

Qupzilla

It has a few quirks, but overall it's much better than Firecucks - less bloat, less RAM, interface looks actually decent on KDE

Just use UZBL or Dillo if you want something free and minimalistic and shit

Don't we have like 3 browser threads already? You guys sure do love $CURRENT_YEAR webshit when you're so obsessed with it.

you might as well go ahead and shill vivaldi and brave as the only and true chromium forks

To be perfectly honest what the fuck is the point of using the Linux kernel without GNU? Linux fucking sucks; monolithic kernels were outdated in 1991 and they're incredibly outdated today. Not to mention that it's the only popular Unix-like kernel that doesn't support anything like jails or zones, and due to licensing autism you can't use it with ZFS. The only reason to be using Linux at all is because it's the kernel with the best compatibility with GNU, which is only because it was the first unix-like kernel to use GPL and therefore the one that's received the most GNU-centric development. If you're not going to use GNU you may as well not use Linux either.

Linux is a full featured and mature kernel. The fact that the architecture is outdated means nothing, the important issue is that does it work, can it be extended to support more architectures and devices, and can it be configured to support special use cases. The answer for Linux is yes.

What about Linux namespaces, as used by Docker, Firejail and nspawn?
Canonical ships ZFS for Linux.

It's really only between Qupzilla and Pale Moon.

Firefox because privacy addons.
I wish it wasn't so, but what can y'do.

kek such a thing isn't possible.

It needs more help
It need to build a community of people willing to make a change because sjwfox are going full rust retard and plain corporate retard.
The good point tho is that re-writting in rust is forcing them to re-read the code thus removing a lot of bullshit that should have been removed a decade ago.
But rust isn't the solution.
In the long run it's going to be fucking slow.

Bullshit there has been a lot of good optimization in the past year.
But you still get some google botnet thanks to the protection features.
Icecat removes them tho.

The devuan team has been masturbating to the surf browser recently has anyone tried it ?

Say thanks to javascript.
But at the same time I am happy to know that Flash player is dying.
But I am not happy about EME.
Normally free software has been partly directing the internet into it's glory and now we have shit thanks to who ?
Greedy corporations and governments.
They know very well how everything works now.
Disney and similar knows that they get more result by sending their own team on image boards shilling their shit.
Corporate's and CIA niggers knows that they can disrupt and manipulate the hacker community by injecting shitty ideologies via SJWs/LGBT and just opensorce/linux.
The community isn't divided because of itself, it was divided because people wanted it to be divided and manipulated.
And sadly everyone took the bait.

And you know what made them cancer ?
Too much money and SJWs

it means 'with the botnet gutted out' you autistic nerd.

Vivaldi, you can stack tabs and tile stacks, but it's still just Chromium with a different UI.
it's a fukkin botnet, but what isn't these days

All I want from a browser:

Sadly Firefox is STILL the only browser offering all three. Although not for much longer, I hear.

Why don't we just rename Holla Forums to /browser/? Then we can discuss which computers run browsers and which portable disks are good for storing your bookmarks in Consumer Advice. We can solve browser add-on issues in Questions and Support. Each browsers gets a separate rotating thread as well which would make this board quite a bit cleaner and easier to navigate. What do you think, OP?

Chromera is the supreme browser for supreme people like me.

I'm fine with Chromium. It may not be perfect "privacy" wise but it's acceptable to me.

Please define botnet and how Chromium is one and provide sources.

Well to be fair, I sometimes wonder why this board is even called Holla Forums when it's just about distros and browsers. It's kind of low-tier pleb tech. People want secure, but won't give up features. Sad state, this board. You know how many times I see pentesting threads, or people using kali? Never. People here are just regular computer users with no interest in actual TECHNOLOGY. The fun stuff. Just "Hey man I don't want the NSA to know I surf porn and watch pewdiepie, how do I protect myself" :^)

Well perhaps it's time that you make a pentesting thread. Someone needs to take an initiative, otherwise nothing will happen. I'm sure there are some smart people lurking here but just don't find any interesting threads to contribute to and would probably engage in discussion if such thread was made. It would be actually interesting if we made challenges for each other e.g. run some insecure version of some service and try to exploit it. Or maybe even set up wargames like overthewire.org/wargames/ We could also have demo programming contests, those would be pretty awesome too. But nothing of this will happen if everyone just sits here and wait for something to happen.

Hacking for fun died in like 2004. It's all hard cold cash now.

"I aint dropping warez for free here, nigga."

Yep, like everything else even hacking has been integrated into the system as "penetration testing" and you now have people proudly claiming they are "white hat hackers", "the good kind", with a sort of neurotic glee of being on the right side of history and cucks of the system.

Can we really trust that Firefox isn't botnet as well? Has there ever been a full security audit of the source code?

Mozilla has been so fucking shady lately I don't know if anyone can trust them

"Botnet" on /g/ and Holla Forums usually means something that routinely harms your privacy by sending your data somewhere. It's easy to verify whether something is doing that, just by watching its network traffic. Backdoors are another issue. Security and privacy are related, but not the same.

end your life, unironically

What about pcxFirefox? It's made by a chink but it's a debloated FF option, also no addon compatibility issues like Palememe.

waterfox is decent for windows, I'm glad to hear that

remember to only use up to 17.3 since 18 and up use systemd

Cyberfox is giving up because add-ons

...

It's not good, but it is "like jails or zones".

Gas yourself.

I've just installed UZBL, and I'm really impressed. It runs incredibly fast, and adheres to the Unix philosophy...I think this might actually be the answer to the "all browsers are shitty" problem.

...

I'm liking it too but does have a point

I loved uzbl when I tried it, aside from the default keybindings which I'd change to be more vimperator/qutebrowser like.
But MUH ADDONS. MUH UBLOCK.

muh treestyle tabs also

Fucking this. I can't use a browser without Pentadactyl and Tree Style Tabs anymore.

I really liked Arora. Too bad it sucks ass and crashes all the time.

What about something like this: use uzbl for when you want pretty pictures and ease of interaction with a website (imageboards, etc.), and w3m in emacs when you just want to read without being distracted by ads.

Tabbed browsing, titles, etc.: I'm using i3 for my window manager, and using stacked layout to get 'tabs' just by calling separate instances of uzbl-browser for each site I want to visit. I shat out a horrid little python script so that I could call frequently visited sites from the dmenu, instead of bookmarking them in the browser. So far this setup is working well, and I don't really see that many ads. But there may be some awful security hole that I don't know about...

Tabs a shit. I want a tab tree like TST provides.

Personal preference, innit? For me, I'd rather have my pages load fast, and I don't generally have that many tabs open, so this solution keeps things fast, and is clean to look at.
But if you like a tab tree... what about uzbl.org/wiki/uzbltreetab Not interested in trying it myself, for the reasons given above.
But given the regularity of "when are we going to have a browser that doesn't suck" threads, and the semi-regular suggestions that Holla Forums writes its own browser, uzbl might not be a bad one for anyone interested in doing that to put their energy into, as it is very few lines of code, and nice and Unixy.

...

Er....

He's talking about the project linked to in the post he was replying to:
github.com/jakeprobst/uzblstuff

The Unix Philosophy™ argument against add-ons and ad-blockers would be that it is the browsers job to retrieve and display web pages, not to edit them. Use a preprocessor, like privoxy, if you want to edit the page before displaying it.

In a similar vein: It's a web browser, not a window manager. Do it like and use your wm to manage your browser windows.

Ah...sorry. My apologies. Here's a cup of tea.

Google Inc. has your privacy in the least of their interests:
see ungoogled-chromium, or inox patchset. everything you do in chromium Google gets informed about

The unix philosophy doesnt mean every user interface you interact with has to be minimal and you do all the chaining together yourself.
Thats a stupid solution though, because you need to edit a config file then restart privoxy every time you want to make a change to the blocking rules. Its infinitely more convenient to do it on the fly.

That's a flaw of Privoxy though, not of preprocessor systems in general.

its bad to use that as an argument against 'I wish uzbl had plugins like ublock' is what im saying. Privoxy doesnt solve that problem nor does any other preprocessor I know of.
If we wanted something like that for uzbl, yeah, itd probably be implemented as a preprocessor you can modify the rulers of and reload on the fly with some kind of interface like umatrix. or, some other interface for different addons. the complaint of, "cant use uzbl cuz no addons" is still valid

But the strength of the unix philosophy is that you can blame flaws on small programs instead of the system as a whole

Im not sure what you're saying

Aol is the best browser.

You do not have to restart privoxy, when changing rules.

Except a proxy can't touch encrypted traffic - which is 90% of traffic these days. Also some ads can't be blocked cleanly just by removing content from the page. You need to cosmetically mask them in the browser's layout engine to avoid breaking the page.

I don't want multiple windows, I want a single browser instance with multiple pages that share session state. Also, the WM doesn't have the information to organize open pages well. I want them organized in a tree that reflects the relationships between them. Links opened in a new tab should be attached as children to the current tab, for example.
Also, you're making the exact same argument that Microsoft made for not including tabs in IE6. You know how well it worked for them.

chrome browser.

Oh great, another browser thread! It's been 2 days since the last one.

HOW CAN I COMPILE CHROMIUM TO HAVE MP4 SUPPORT?!

How can I make it so firefox does not shorten file names when using "save link as"
I am using linux mint

Whoever bumped this thread deserves to be shot.

y-you too

Unsurprisingly, 'twas a sucklessfag:

Except IE6 had many other unspeakable issues. Tabs in a browser don't work very differently to tabs in i3 or grouped windows in other WMs. They have all the information you need. TST is a useful system, but it's not default, and could very well be done by an external tab manager like uzbl-tabbed, or by your WM.

Look, someone already did that work for ya, famalama.
chromium.woolyss.com

thank you fam, I suppose I should have googled first, been getting complacent

I use tor-browser with javascript disabled and a custom userChrome.css which makes it look alright, I still need to figure out how to change the background of the search suggestions. Qwant is a pretty quick search engine too.

Right now anyway. It's been some time since initial launch but still very shit.

wait fuck
I only need widevine for MP4 right?
I really don't want sync and webrtc active

Well, based on some reccomendations of this thread,
I've tried two web browsers

qutebrowser:
sometimes reverts during browsing

qupzilla

I've decided to use both for now, I do need streaming for important things, so im torn.

I usually use Icecat because I like to rice the shit out of everything. Epiphany is my backup browser. Used to be sort of buggy like Midori but it's become smooth sailing lately. Surprised nobody mentioned it. If you like the way chromium looks and feels but aren't into traps give it a try.

ok widevine only worked well, stellar

I use palemoon with uBlock, uMatrix, and HTTPS Everywhere.

I still can't find a reason to use another browser over it, fuck Brave, I don't want to rely on pre-configured shit, any browser that doesn't spy on you with the extensions above is all you will ever need.

What is Polarity Browser? Downloaded it, look pretty okay-ish, its on chromium, BUT it seems to use lot less memory, whats the cath? Anyone used it?

insights.ubuntu.com/2016/02/18/zfs-licensing-and-linux/

Pale Moon still gets locked in 25% CPU usage occasionally but it's better than Chrome purely because Firefox addons are better than Chrome addons.

Just make your own, nerd.

This. Addons are what makes a browser these days.

If you like qutebrowser, you could try luakit

Woah, looks cool man. Might consider depending on how retarded GTK3/WebKit2GTK is. (I have gtk3 installed due to it being in slackware, but I have no apps that use it since it pissed me off back when it was introduced. Not sure how it is now)

Is the new luakit fork configured the same way as the old one ? Because I'm retarded and even my grandman can configure qutebrowser.

Fifth

Otter Browser
otter-browser.org/

I can't really speak from a user's perspective about GTK and webkit; from a dev's point of view, GTK3 has some nicer features, but I haven't fully explored them. I get the feeling that GTK's CSS could (and possibly already does?) offer a very attractive way for users to re-theme their desktop, like userstyles for the desktop, but I've never developed a GTK theme and I know they've accrued a poor reputation from themers.

From a security point of view, which I tend to believe is indispensable when browsing the web, WebKit2GTK was until recently the only port for Linux that was up-to-date, and even then only on some platforms. I've experimented privately with a port to CEF, and am anticipating adding Servo backend support when that stabilizes.

It is configured _mostly_ the same way, but I'm afraid there are a few API differences if you're doing major customization. The core distinction between my port and the pre-existing luakit is that mine uses the newer WebKit2 API, as opposed to the older and insecure WebKit1 API. I've done my best to maintain compatibility, but a fundamental part of the switch is that WebKit2 is very multiprocess- and async-oriented. I've experimented with blocking the UI/web processes in order to maintain stability; this mostly caused WebKit to crash internally.

The good news is that I've ported all the included libraries to the new APIs. There's adblock (filter lists, not just hosts), vertical tabs rudimentary noscript, SOCKS proxy support, referer control, user scripts and user styles; all the usual requests. It also crashes a hell of a lot less than the old webkit did.
