Tell me, since you are the one saying that it is a horrible idea, please state the reasons why you think that. Is it just because it wouldn't be "popular"? Because the whole point here is that we are trying to determine why chans (image boards) which once were very popular are now dying so rapidly. My suggestion is to return to the basic things which made them popular to begin with, image sharing, which has largely been supplanted by conversation on chans. At least the theory has logical validity, so you can't dismiss it outright. But I would certainly be willing to hear legitimate points of criticism if you are willing to share them.

For example, you may think it is too extreme a change. OK, the other thing that was discussed at the same time was requiring every post to have an image accompany it. Sort of an intermediary step between what we have now and banning text entirely. That was shot down rapidly because all it would accomplish is using shitload of bandwidth for memes that would be posted merely as an excuse to spout textshit. In other words, it would make things worse.

Eliminating text would not stop conversation. It would just make it occur through the images. People would have to ask themselves whether it is important enough to say something that they would be willing to open Photoshop, type what they want to say on to an image, and then post it every time. Most people would not want to do that for simple snarkiness, but would be willing to do so in order to make an important point. The level of textual conversation would therefore rise, even though the volume of textual conversation would decrease. In addition, more original image content would appear.

But maybe your objection is that you don't come here for images at all. Maybe you only come here for conversation, in which case I would argue that you are on the wrong website entirely, and would be much better off fucking off to Facebook.

Someone please explain to me what effect banning has on someone who is deliberately fucking with this board while using a VPN. Nobody has ever explained how banning is an effective way to stop people from spamming/flooding/posting CP repeatedly if they want to. There has never been any need to change the rules. The rules are not what has been the problem. The problem has been how the rules are enforced. And it remains the case today, even with the new rules (which 90% of posters don't even know about because they ignore Dysnomia's sticky threads entirely).
There is no way to enforce the rules beyond deletion of an image or thread. That is no deterring factor. It is nothing but a mild irritant, which serves only as an encouragement to escalation if the person is posting something as a troll.
I have said it before and I will repeat it because it has obviously not gotten through the thick layer of blubber surrounding Dysnomia's peabrain…the rules don't matter unless you are able to ban. And I don't mean rangeban, that is bullshit and doesn't work. I mean actually ban someone permanently and effectively. If Dysnomia doesn't have that mod tool available to him, all he is doing here with the rules is jerking off. That is the reality that he can either face or ignore. But the longer he ignores it, the more people are leaving the board for good. Average PPH is still dropping by 10 per week. This board's reputation is horrible, and when people talk about it they invariably mention the name Dysnomia as being the biggest factor in why Holla Forums is such shit. Not the pedos, not the spammers, not the flooders, not the bronies, but the board owner himself. Let that sink in…the people who are leaving here are not leaving because of the low thread quality! While I agree with most of what you said, this part here is easier said than done. The tools mods have to work with here are horrible and unreliable. The tools they have to ban with are even worse. Technically it is impossible to ban anyone who does not want to be banned, so that part of the job simply can not be done by ANY mod, good, bad, or in between. None of that is the fault of the mods, either. That is the fault of the board owner and Jim/Ron. Further, the mods have been given no concrete guidelines upon which to engage in moderation. They are told to delete cancer, but there is no criterion to determine what constitutes "cancer". it is left up to complete subjectivity. In other words, they have no decent pro-active board owner support. That is not their fault either, that is Dysnomia's fault.

The rest of it is on them like you said, but these very crucial aspects of modding here are not their fault.

My view of what makes a good mod is diametrically opposed to your's, then. Up until now I've just been taking shots at dysnomia in long-winded paragraphs for not moderating correctly, but I haven't had a chance to either actually clarify what I want for this board or see my ideas play out.
Now that I'm mod, however, I can kind of influence change in the direction I prefer, and as I can I might as well also take the opportunity to attempt to succinctly put into words my endgame for moderating.
And I garuntee I've thought about this harder than the guy writing out pages of creative insults like that scene in Community with the theater director and Ken Jeong; throwing shit for mods not acting in a certain manner isn't the same as arguing in favor of that behavior. And that's still necessary, because it's not some unanimously agreed-on concept that less modertion is better. Or, if it is, I'm here to contest that. People here only consider free speech in meta-drama, but they need to start also thinking about quality control or just leaving, and fast.
I say kind of, because I can only see my ideas borne out to certain extent. A good allegory would be ancaps and Somalia: the state fell in Somalia due to the lack of it's ability to maintain a monopoly on capable coercive force (as opposed to slowly being replaced by private institutions through countereconomics), and I'm not BO yet, only a BV. So there's some room to experiment, but not much.

First of all, I need to define the terminology I've thought about this in the context of. There are, in my eyes, three main "modes" or "materials", so to speak, that build up what make an imageboard. These would be the content (or for the purpose of this post, the threads specifically), the moderation, and the users. I guess you could count the mechanics of the site itself, like masterchan's account system, but that's not relevant enough to mention because neither me nor dysnomia really have a say in that.
These are self explanatory. The content, which is modified/filtered by the moderation, is decided by the users as a whole. The userbase will always attempt to veer closest to the unfiltered form of the content, while the moderation veers away from that. Thus, there's a permanent struggle between the two and they'll always be at odds. But having the moderation agree with the users isn't necessary the goal. If the users are all children and shitposters, and the mods tend to their needs and never get in the way of their horrible postings, then there will be no disagreement, but the board won't be good. So we need more terms to define how these three base factors of board quality work, and in what state they are currently.
If something is "democratically" controlled, that means the entirety of the people as a whole have control over it, and decide everything about it. For example, right now the threads are democratically controlled in the bump/sage system, where it is entirely and only up to the users that actually make the threads which ones survive and which ones prune off of the catalog. Meanwhile, the moderation is un-democratically controlled, in that it's up to a pretty arbritrary group of specially-priveged mods to moderate the threads. I'll refrian talking about the users until later.
My endgame is to entirely flip around this dynamic. I want the threads un-democratically controlled, and the moderation completely democratically controlled. An un-democratic moderation is censorship, while an un-democratic thread selection is quality control. I'm not interested in people whining about free speech, as someone who formerly did just that. What this board needs is quality control now.

In my endgame ownership of the board, moderation is completely democratic: there's a linked poll to vote for or against all available mods' preformance, and if the for:against ratio dips into a minority for a certain period of time that mod is let go. Whenever someone makes a ban appeal, either some special mod manually or perhaps even a bot posts in a stickied thread with a picture of a appeal and post the user was banned for, and a link to a poll for deciding if they should be unbanned. For new mods, perhaps we hold elections every X weeks or months. There's a lot of opportunity for fun and OC in election threads. Things like board settings or banner additions would be decided by a vote from the mods. I, the BO, would intervene for things that are obviously illegal and not getting deleted, but even then I actually do trust the "invisible hand", so to speak, to manage itself effectively.

Instead of letting any shitposter or spammer occupy as many spaces on the catalog as they'd like, they'd only be able to fuck around within at max a couple dozen sticked cyclicals, each with a broad topic like "pedo" or "politics", that act as the only threads on the board (any other thread would be deleted pretty quickly). This sounds like a horrible idea at first, especially of you're resistant to change and like insulting the mods no matter what they do, but it'd improve the board dramatically. Each thread would have it's own vibrant sub-culture, memes and OC, tripfags and people that hate tripfags. This is because within a single, infinite thread, culture builds on itself and creates a tight-knit community far quicker than individual scattered threads do. This is because the more streamlined a conversation is, the more it's forced to build on itself and quicker become self-referencial. Thus, an increasingly more tight-knit collective conversation is formed, as opposed to random things shouted into the abyss that might get 10 or so responses and then become ignored forever.
Immediately changing the way the board functions would probably lead to user whiplash, a massive revolt and the death of the board. So, instead, starting with what I can do as a BV, I'll build up to this model gradually and let the people more resistant to change here figure out for themeselves that this is the best model for board quality. I can start democratizing aspects of the moderation right now, and I plan to soon by testing out my ban appeal idea with any random appeal that shows up for, say, a pedoshit ban that may or may not have been justified. I can also start un-democratizing threads by stickying & cyclicaling threads that are high quality and yet ignored. I won't bumplock or lock threads that are low quality, at least for now, because that would create user pushback that could see my plan blow up in my face from angry shitposters that know they're shitposters (or underaged children that actually think their posts are good) holding on to the ideal of free speech. A more intermediate form of this is to, when I become BO or even now as a BV by means of influencing dysnomia, hire "taste maker" mods from quality posters whose job it is to just sticky threads they think are good.

Now I can talk about the users themselves. The completely democratic control of the userbase would be decentralized, in that it's impossible to ban anyone because everyone has their own server. Think that "federated network of chans" idea that was floating around a while back. The undemocratic control, on the other hand, would be something akin to an idea Dysnomia had in which he enables capcode-only on Holla Forums and picks out people worthy of posting from another board. Neither are really feasible- instead, it's about the halfway, and the two means of influencing the userbase without completely controlling it. A positive change is something that drives a user or users into a board, while a negative change drives (a) user/s away from the board. Dysnomia has only ever focused on negative changes, by means of banning, but never on a positive change. I propose literal organized campaigns to look for similar communities considered quality by the posters here, and reaching out to them in search of new users. Think masterchan's shilling, but with the intention of getting new posters instead of killing the site they're shilling in. Positive change can be more effective than just banning people in the long term, because even the low quality underaged posters want to emulate the rest of the userbase to some extent. Import in good posters and all the medicore posters will imitate them.
Of course, the possibility that I'm out of whack is being kept in the back of my mind and if I fail I'll just give in and be your obediant little moderator that shuts up and only deletes illegal content. I think that there's a certain value to that too, only that the alternative is also worth being explored in case it's actually the better option.

This only works on a perfect system where ban evasion and poll rigging isn't possible. I do like most of your ideas, I really do, but you have to consider the limitations of the software we are running. Many of us have dynamic IP, VPN or proxies, and we can and will spoof everything that we can in order to get back to this place. On other sites there is a lot of software that prevents us from doing this one way or another, but Holla Forums is fairly volatile when it comes to keeping something out.

not exactly. maybe this wasn't communicated clearly in that post, but the difference between censorship and quality control here is that censorship is taking current existing content, and deleting it. in my endgame Holla Forums there'd only be a couple dozen cyclicals of different broad topics, right? so, a cyclical for webms, a cyclical for relationships/picking up women, a cyclical for shitposting or extremely low effort posts, a cyclical for raids. that's the gist. this model is quality control (by streamlining the conversations and, theoretically, making the community more tight-knit), but it isn't censorship because no content is being removed, it's just being reorganized. if you can't find a proper thread for your post, just post it in the misc or shitposting cyclical. but it's not being deleted, it's only being told to go in a specific place.
