Look into backend languages, and determine what is best for your purpose. Besides how you interact with the database, you are going to have to learn how you even create a database. This really depends on how much and what type of information you want to store. You will also want to learn SQL for sure which is really easy. When writing your backend code, always use parameterized queries so your shit isn't susceptible to SQL injection too. There's a lot that you will have to figure out on your own, I can't really tell you what is best for your purposes.

I recommend learning backend but with a crutch like pubnub, c9 is ok but can be overwhelming with all that control.
PHP is good for learning back end basic functions like uploading images and getting the images to post, then doing it all in one function

It's mainly just SQL and PHP used for backend. They exchange data between the website and database. And they are essential to learn if you want to be a web programmer.

So, anyway, I am a software engineer myself and can help you out a little. It's very common these days for companies to departmentalize their development teams, splitting them into front-end and back-end, though it's not uncommon to have full-stack developers who are proficient from the client to the server.

As a front-end developer, you will likely not be involved in any the back-end code which mostly consists of the controllers that manage incoming/outgoing HTTP requests, the biz layer which contains all of the validation and business logic, and the data layer which passes the data received by the client to the database.

You'll most likely be working with REST services where you send/receive JSON objects via POST, GET, and PUT requests to the server. You typically also do not require any object oriented programming (OOP) if you're using jQuery or straight Javascript, but will definitely need strong understanding of OOP if you're using something like TypeScript.

If you have absolutely no back-end experience and your job requires it, you're going to fall flat on your face.
