They think that either A) they're good just as they are, B) that quality is determined by how subversive progressive a piece is and that talent doesn't matter, or C) that standards are oppressive and that sucking is actually good because you're sticking it to the man.

Yes it's true that no work or creator is beyond criticism. But that doesn't mean all criticism is valid in all cases.

Judging a piece based on the "goal" that it's creator intended is criticizing their beliefs/taste not their art. It's like saying Saw is a bad movie because it's gory and you hate gore. It's an irrelevant complaint because it was the entire point of the movie and there are people that were okay with seeing it. You not being the audience they were trying to reach is not an objective fault of the piece.

I think I found the problem. There was a translation error. You see, in Japanese "kawaii" means cute or pretty, while "kowai" means scary. The teacher probably meant to say the definition for kowai but instead said the definition for kawaii.

You need to look at the bright side. With so many animators copying each other, we can actually probably have a bunch of small animation studios subsidized by the government to produce crap to keep the next generation distracted after school/work.

You can blame Penn Ward for that one. He did it well and in a way that strengthened the shows he did– for example, it added a whimsical style to Adventure Time and Flapjack. Flapjack in particular had a Spongebob-esc feel to it, which was likely very intentional.
Then all the people that he hired for AT just mimicked it, weren't told any better, and periodically got worse as artists. If you look at the pre-AT work of people like Natasha Allegri, you'll see potential that got squandered.

It also doesn't help that it lets people that don't know how to draw get through the cracks. A good example of this is Benton Connor, mentioned by

I wouldn't say Pen Ward is entirely to blame for how Allegri turned out. If people who knew her when she was active on Livejournal are to be believed, she's always been a massive flake.

Though you do bring up another interesting point about Connor. A big thing about Cartoon Network's current output of "talent" is that they have absolutely no range when it comes to their art now - all they can do is noodle arms and maybe some low-quality anime knock-offs. It's part of the reason why the nuPPG looks like ass, all the artists they have working on it weren't capable of replicating the original style, so they had to break the designs and art direction of the original until it fit into their comfort zone.

You talk about Manara as if he was some sort of 20yo from New Jersey. Dude, he's a legend, he's been creating comics since the 70s, and has worked with people like Fellini or Pedro Almodovar. Manara gets work because he's Milo Manara, he doesn't need these people, at this point he did the Marvel shit out of fun. It's funny to realize that he gets to expose his work in Fine Arts museums all over Europe yet in America they act like tight cunts.
