Porn may not "promote" a healthy view of male or female sexuality, but is it really obliged to? I like to think of porn as being sort of like the sexual media equivalent of early silent film, where everyone had to act in these vastly exaggerated hammy gestures in order to confidently telegraph emotional states and developments to viewers without the help of fluid dialogue. Unlike silent film though, porn hasn't really evolved into anything more sophisticated because it has spent decades languishing in the lumpen underbelly of society where the porn that did get produced had to stick to what worked in order to make a reliable profit, and because there are some pretty fundamental anatomical restrictions on filming sex scenes. The difficulties that go into filming unsimulated sex scenes in movies that have specific scripting demands out of them, like "Shortbus", reveal why Hollywood hasn't really bothered to make any inroads on this.

Long story short, porn as we know it might be cheap and bawdy and even downright silly in it's depiction of sexuality, but maybe with a bit of time and development to remove the material restrictions on filming unsimulated sex, it might give way or at least partially branch off into more "mature" sex media.

That's an interesting take on it, but I wonder if the "maturation" of the medium will have any effect on the sexual expectations it fosters within people.

I'd like to think that a more mature offshoot from porn would have more nuanced and developed depictions of fulfilling sex, but maybe not enough to make a difference, who knows.
