Essentially until my oldest was 13 they did not have access to computers in the house. They really didn't need it. I would always take them outside and teach them to do cool shit that would amaze their friends. However, they always bugged me because "all my friends have computers!!1! I need a computer to!!" or "all my friends have iphones!!1! I need an iphone to!!1!" At some point they started throwing hissy fits about the shit, so I eventually obliged. With a catch.
Now almost all of them have already used wangblows 7 at school, and know essentially how to use it. So, in the spirit of making them work for shit, I went out and bought a good old thinkpad. Just install child safety software. Kids today aren't as savvy as before because they're growing up with smartphones and tablets rather than desktop computers, so the chances of a 7 year old kid managing to circumvent the restrictions are slim.
Parents need to stop being lazy and learn how to manage the devices their kids are using, which is arguably far easier now than its ever been because of how simplistic user interfaces have become.
