Could always go back to the idea of an SBC cluster that uses an OS like Qubes that's been brought up on Holla Forums before. Basically have a master SBC allot different processes to slave SBCs instead of VMs. It wouldn't be ideal but it could be more scalable and potentially more powerful than whatever free option are out there today. From my understanding it's also a lot cheaper and easier to find companies willing to make a free device when it's lower power or more dated.

If you really wanted a Power system and you were loaded with cash, you didn't need to fund the Talos. You can buy a Power8 server from say Tyan or IBM for around that price you mentioned too, and those are already on the market.

It's goal was also huge. The EOMA68 also didn't get too much exposure outside the free/libre software community, and it raised less than the Talos did. The difference? It only had a $150k goal VS $3+ million. It's a lot easier to meet a smaller goal for a niche product than it is to meet a multimillion dollar goal.

The first RISC-V computers for mass consumption are going to be slower than the slowest of all ARM single-board computers, and also probably costly. Any RISC-V CPU that could compete in performance with modern x86 would occur years or even decades in the future.
