All this happy-go-lucky shit and not one thing has been mentioned about the Roaming Eye or the possibility of Homeworld if not Yellow Diamond coming to Earth. An invasion of Earth seems like the next logical step in the story after the search party went missing and the cluster seemingly not activating, but no they have to shove this "MUH FEELS" nonsense down our throats.

Star Vs. The Forces of Evil may have been too distracted with menial episodes for the beginning of season 2 but, that has more of an excuse due to being relatively young. But for this show to have inconsequential episodes this far into the story after so much has happened is the most egregious thing a creator can do.

The creators should stop wasting our time and move onto the invasion plotline already.

That's the thing though, SVTFOE's filler episodes are at least somewhat entertaining and they at least move the plot forward by adding in extra stuff, like the fact that Star has a crush on Marco or seeing Ludo slowly lose his sanity.

But with SU their filler does NOTHING to move the plot forward, Pearl spends an entire night stalking some bitch because she looked like Rose, a character who is never going to be mention or heard from again until the next season

Both Bismuth and Jasper have been written off the show leaving the show with no real antagonist once again and the writers cannot be fucking bothered to follow up on the Yellow Diamond shit that they set up two seasons ago!

Something along the lines of as well as prioritizing the characters better. I don't care if Bismuth comes in and out of a bubble or if Jasper stays a fucking AIDS dog forever. Their involvement in the plot alone makes them much more important than Onion, or Connie, or Sadie, or any of those other boring side characters the writers like shoving down our throats. If they want the biggest theme to be "love," whatever they think that means, they can focus on Greg and Rose's relationship. That alone should fill the bill much better than Garnet, or Connie carrying Steven for no good reason. They can fill the roles Steven has, and better.

In fact, Steven could be scrapped with no problem. Greg's "polyamorus" murdercock curing all the Gems' issues is more than progressive enough. They're not really strong independent wymyn anyway.

In fact, what's the point of touching upon their lack of "true" strength and independence, if they can just cling to each other at the end of the day? Garnet lecturing Pearl about "being her own gem" irked me because she is obsessed with fusion, and her very existence relies on her components being so codependent. And Amethyst and Steven talking about working hard? They didn't have to do a fucking thing fighting Jasper; they just fused into that Smoky abomination and won anyway.

You know what would be more compelling? If Amy did win against Jasper. Not through strength, but by embracing that "she's not like anybody" and using her unorthodox fighting style cleverly. Smokey itself used Jasper's force against her and set her pets free with it, why can't Amy? Even her weapon's good for redirection and using enemies as a flail. If that's too cliche, make it so that Steven can't fuse with Gems, forcing them to truly work together. Peridot could've been more of a help, too, even without her metal powers. Her intelligence and formerly strategic and objective-oriented nature makes for a good leader, but I've already written too much.

Oh wait, all that involves spending some of their budget on animating more than two characters at the same time. That money's better spent on one-time celebrity voices, nevermind.

The whole Mystery Girl episode is literally a teenager's coming-of-age story with a nerd coming out of their shell, though. It just happens to feature a woman as the protagonist and love interest.

I dunno about you guys, but I read that episode differently.
Like, I feel that Pearl wasn't really chasing after mystery girl simply because "looks like muh Rose" but more because of what she represents - change, taking the offensive for once. Sure, the initial attraction based on her looks is kinda shallow of her, but it is only after the second chance meeting that Pearl finally nuts up and decides to see what happens when she's no just waiting for somebody to come to her. The third time I suppose she must have thought "well shit, there she is again, might as well."
I suppose there are two explanations to Pearl's attraction to the mystery girl.
1- While Pearl has moved on in terms of building bridges with Greg and finally letting go of the resentment she had for him, her love for Rose will likely never die, so he familiar look of MG is comforting and is merely a stepping stone for Pearl to work her way out of her shell an finally look for love elsewhere.
2 - Pearl's got a thing for big chicks with pink hair.

Su is created in the hopes of being successful while gen zed was created with the intention of never having to release more than a trailer and causing as much controversy so the creator could try to cash in on victim bucks

Well yeah, it's clearly meant to be Pearl trying to move on, also bringing up her past as a rebel, to contrast with how she's basically the most conservative and cautious of the Gems now.

Kinda funny; due to Gems being unaging it could read both ways as 'Sheltered nerd finally steps out into the world for a coming of age' and 'Widowed housewife finally starts living for herself again, recalling her glory days'.

A lot of Gem stuff is written to be applicable as an analogy, but not a direct counterpart to human stuff. (Fusion as relationships/friendships/teamwork, for one)

Actually kind of seems to be a point that not a lot of the Crystal Gems necessarily cared specifically about Earth and humanity, but fought because they want a place to live free of Homeworld's oppressive caste system and strict heirarchy; where they can act outside their assigned roles, socialise with anyone they want, and pursue their own happiness rather than serving those above them exclusively. Basically Earth is their America.

And even then, Rose's view of humanity was pretty condescending (if still positive) til she got to know Greg better and realised how little she really knew about the world she'd dedicated herself to.

That sounds like the foundation for an antagonistic group of humans.

Wouldn't it be great if this show had that? They would be like the Covenant, worshipping the Diamonds, reverse engineering their technology and be in opposition to the Crystal Gems. They would also see through their facade of wanting to protect humans when the only thing they care about is their own selfish freedom. They would even exploit the Crystal Gems recklessness and disdain for individual humans and build their image of fighting for the betterment of humans and furthering their cause.

Now that I think about it, this all seems like the most egregious missed opportunity the staff could ever pass on. What do you people think?

I'm kinda waiting for a "Garfield minus Garfield" of Steven Universe, even if it was just a fanfic. I don't hate Steven, but he is most certainly wearing the plot down because he is a character that doesn't seem to belong to the series, almost as if he was hamfisted there against the writers' will because the higher ups told them a show with an all-female cast wouldn't sell enough toys. Fuck, even Connie would make a better Crystal Gem, and she isn't even a gem.

Also, the Homeworld cult idea is shit and would stick out like a sore thumb in SU's format. It seems the kind of idea you would throw in one of those cheaply animated cartoons that always end their episodes with "TO BE CONTINUED…" even though there is never a cliffhanger to warrant it

Given the Crystal Gems barely pay attention to humanity most of the time, Homeworld certainly doesn't. Wouldn't be believable at this point.

A human antagonist group might work better as an X-COM analogue; either a government or private organisation studying and reverse-engineering Gem technology. They may well view the Crystal Gems as holding humanity back, having hoarded Gem technology and refused to let humanity have a chance of standing up to Homeworld themselves. (The best kind of villain is the one who has a point)

Steven was pretty obnoxious early on, but for most of the show at this point he's generally been pretty reasonable about things. His pacifist attitude may seem more trouble than its worth, but it's a valid protagonist approach, see Aang. (and much like Aang, he finds that sticking to your principles no matter what is difficult and demanding even if you are incredibly powerful; but still perhaps worth doing to make an example)

While it's true the show revolves around him, he actually has a minor role in the actual plot, which mostly reduces to "I'm gonna cry a bit until these cunts realize they are being stupid and feel bad about it" or that reverse abortion mutant who unwillingly killed his mother. SU without SU would probably be slightly darker or more action-oriented, more in line with a shounen anime, and would probably have way more tension since nobody could keep the Crystal Gems in check to avoid them killing each other over minor shit or muh consent.

Don't get me wrong, Steven isn't actually a bad character and I like the way he is, but I feel he is the right man in the wrong series. His innocence clashes way too much in a plot about alien imperialism and absolute madwomen who decided to stick it to the all-powerful emperors. It's almost like the plot is asking for more cynical or otherwise rude characters rather than a kid who solves everything with emotional diplomacy. I have nothing against non-action protagonists, but the problem here is this diplomacy usually appears unwillingly because he started to cry in the right moment. In other words, he is not an active character, but a passive character who happens to solve the problem of the day through pure chance. I do remember some episodes where he actually had the brains or skill to solve problems, though, and those were nice.

Eh, I think there's something amusing about how in a series dominated by powerful women with varying levels of brain problems who are perfectly happy to use violence to solve problems, it's a young man who is caring, thoughtful and strong-willed enough to use reason, empathy and kindness to try and defuse conflict at every turn.

It seems implied that, basically, Steven as a human/gem hybrid couldn't exist without Rose giving up her life to pass down her powers and abilities to him. It was ultimately a form of suicide, perhaps arguably reincarnation; there's a running theme that many Gem concepts are comparable to human ones, but definitely not straight analogues. (Also doesn't help that gems CAN'T die; the closest thing is being shattered, which just means the remnants of your psyche cling to existence forever in shards desperate to re-unite)

Gems summon their weapons from their gems, and the gem is basically their actual body, the physical form is just a convenience to move it around.

Some clearly do, but consider the tradeoffs. Huge weapons are unwieldy unless you're a fusion, and if you lose or throw them you can't just summon another one like you can with gem weapons.

What if during the Rebellion, Homeworld conscripted and artificially enhanced humans to be gem-like, immortal and used against the rebels? Turn the lifeforms the rebels swore to protect against their protectors. They'd be like African askaris of the European colonial powers, Natives who were born and raised in tribes but work for the colonialists. Humans fighting for Homeworld would have them be seen as the equivalent of child soldiers in the eyes of the rebels which would cause them to hesitate and be easily defeated by zealous warriors yearning to serve the Diamonds. They'd be the most effective fighting force in Homeworld's possession, even if what they're fighting for was based on a hollow lie. And after the war, they regroup and form their own organization and persuade humans into believing them to be the children of the Diamonds. And they'd make it their mission to bring the Homeworld gems to Earth to be turned into gems themselves and serve the Diamonds, which would put them at odds with the Crystal Gems for the next 5,000 years. The presence of this group would cause the Crystal Gems to question whether all life is worth protecting and facing the consequences of their lack of understanding and neglect for humanity and its major problems.
