I work in the energy industry and can tell you that's a load of bullshit. The lucrative "maintenance" contracts that they give out on solar is just another way to jew you out of your money Barring some very rare accident where some external force broke a panel or screwed with the wiring, 99.9% of the "maintenance" is some guy going there with a checklist, looking at the panels for an hour, giving it a pass and then cashing in for his company.

These things almost never need a single dollar of maintenance for 5-15 years, and a cheaper solution would be to simply call a specialist when a problem comes up (which is never for most companies) and pay a one off cost, even if high it would still be much cheaper. But (((everybody))) is in on the game, and, so, these contracts include extremely expensive "maintenance and upkeep" agreements as well. Solar is notorious for this, it's why so many bumfuck Chinese "solar" companies with no real purpose keep popping everyday.

Energy sources like solar and wind have VERY high start up costs (construction and whatnot) relative to their power output. In theory that money can be made back with it after a long enough time, but you have to consider that there's other things that money can be used for: food, electronics, investment, or whatever else.

Sure, maybe installing some solar panels in the desert or making a few wind turbines in the windy city makes sense, but overall these sources of energy are very niche and aren't going to be enough for a national energy infrastructure that can replace things like natural gas without severe economic downsides.
