Anyone play smash?

call me an autist but I've legitimately been addicted to melee I'm still fairly newbie only been playing for like 6-7 months but in that time I've improved so much and I'm starting to get pretty damn good even though I still haven't made it out of pools out of the 3 locals I've been too but I feel like the last one I went to 90% of the games I played were totally winnable and I just made some dumb mistakes or SD's and most were very very close. I've been playing non stop for anywhere from 1 to 4 hours a day I've gotten ridiculously technical but I still play dumb and have so many shitty bad habbits that need fixing the only thing that sucks is I have no actual practice partner or access to netplay I've been trying to convince my brother to try it out competitively but he just won't do it which kinda sucks because I himestly think he would be pretty good he has great ideas when he plays amd I see potential but he just doesn't have the execution. any way does anyone else play smash competetivly at all or do you guys think its just a useless skill because this is honestly the only thing I've ever been this good at.

we got an N64 setup at my buddies house and we play every time we're drinking/doing coke

I play ssb4 but no is at my skill level, I'm at that point where the noob shit doesn't work on me, but I cant footsies as well as good players.

I only play shulk

Meet me on for glory and my Roy will jv3 you

Bruh

64 is pretty awesome I really want to try it out but have no setup for it unfortunately

op here I main falco but I've been having troubke with the marth mu for some reason my lovals are full of marths and I just get gimped to no end if anyone can help me out with going about neutral without giving me a stupid answer like "laser more" it would be appreciated bevause I already need to learn how to go about neutral without straight up over using/abusing lasers

Scratch that, I should've put Pac-Man

You main falco on smash 4? You must be a hard M

don't know enough about ssb4 to really help you with footsies I'm honestly ashamed abiut how many fucking scrubs I've losted to in that game but at the same time I've only played it on 3ds

nah I play melee dude

god damn I really butchered this post

Do you find your self getting caught by his back air often, I haven't had this problem in 4 because shulk air game, while slow, is much better than hers. He has no real tools to close and your neutral is better, you have slightly faster footsie pace, and you should be able to punish him if he goes for a bad engage by using laser, try to force the fight into the air with him facing you, and he loses some of his raw ko potential
After writing this I realized you were talking about melee, my bad

PAC man Is annoying but I've only seen like 2 good ones in fg and they both perfect stocked me.
Most of them don't understand he still has a basic attack and smash and just spam key

I don't have a problem with footsies, I'm just not as good as really good players. I have trouble getting fights started in the air correctly sometimes as well. But that's due to autism and thinking I'm playing yoshi

Oh, good choice. In terms of neutral game, you could set stuff up with hop aerials and grabs. Other than that idk much about falco even tho I used to main him back in the day

I sometimes hold onto the key as a distraction to get my other moves off but I use the melon and bell more often than the key so it doesn't really matter. If his grab wasn't so trash, he would be a pretty fun character to use

even though were talking about different games I can relate to your problems its especially tough when I'm realistically a baby to the scene and these guys at locals have been playing this game for years I recently had to play axe in my pool and that dude had the sickest falco I've ever played I honestly haven't seen anyone play falco that fast before I trued so hard to take at least 1 stock from the guy but it was tough

I mean short hop ariels are good but what can I really do wuen marth has better movement and a giant fucking sword I've been trying to use dash dnacing to bait things out which works really well honestly but I need something else I can't just dash dance the whole game and win when I constantly get gimped

Now that you mention it, marth's hitboxes on melee were wonky as shit. The best advice I can give in terms of dealing with that asshat is to maybe watch some good falco players in tourneys on YouTube

I really wish I could help, such frustrating issues in fighting games. Like not being able to get a match up down

I stopped playing smash for a month after I got perfected by a jiggly puff as fucking shiek. Then I fucking smashed my D's because I was beating his ass under the stage and the server was like lol attempting to reconnect, and then I had so much input delay I couldnt recover.

I mean, they couldn't make him too strong at close combat, but he feels a little too weak at long range to make up for it. I mean, duck hunt dog has similar range but can straight up fight speedsters

his hitboxes can be bullshit but its all about learning how to deal with him and spacing properly which is what I'm still trying to figure out honestly I'm not too smart in terms in playing neutral all the time and my tech skill kinda carries me because I can just overwhelm people with speed

I'm going to be honest when I get destroyed in melee I'm rarley mad as much as I am impressed but when it happens in smash 4 I rarely thing "that was a cool combo" or "that guy played well" as much as I think I just got fucked over by jank or some cheesy as shit but maybe I'm just bad at the game

I think ssb4 has some matchups which really are skillful
The balancing was clearly for casual

Wholeheartedly agree

In tourneys, he isn't as viable as maybe a sheik or Diddy or even fox but he has the tools to be a troll character and that's pretty much as far as his usefulness goes and I really want to see a major tourney win with him.

I definitely agree but there are some matchups that I feel like you're better off just switching characters for the mu advantage

Probably not going to happen since his biggest counter is a heavily played super hitter named yoshi.

Nah, just play shulk, always

Like the blatant Rosalina vs ness and lucas

Since we're on the topic of bad characters, I think the most useless and least used character in smash 4 is Bowser jr. Why did they put his garbage ass in the game? I'm not saying he's completely useless but he is the worst one in smash history hands down

I don't even see what they were going for, like he has no tools that matter at all except for his forward smash

Imho I think they were just trying to avoid adding another good character to the roster like wolf or ice climbers

thats pretty cool I've stayed pretty loyal to my main aswell even though there have been so many times when I felt like giving up and just playing fox because imo falco is a lot harder to play than fox even though at lower levels falco can cheese his way to victory pretty easily. I'm proud of myself for sticking through those tough times though because now my falco is sick as hell amd I've actually been getting pretty damn good. I still want to play fox a bit as a secondary or even a character to use for doubles because I have a pretty sick fox.

I heard ness just gets fucked by dlc

I think sakurai has just been too scared to gear smash towards the competitive audience again honestly which kind of sucks smash is such a unique fighter and this man is honestly a fucking genius I don't know how he thought of all of the mechanics that went behind 64 and melee

Everyone gets fucked by the dlc (except Roy)

I agree, he is a genius but at the same time you can say he's a moron after playing smash 4

I will say this though if I had a group of people that wanted to play smash that knew nothing about it I would much rather pull out smash 4 than my crt and melee. smash 4 is such a great game casually and much easier to play/uunderstand

i think you mean you are going to force them to keep up in footsies while you wavedash like a madman.

that has to do with it but also keeping up with the just the speed and my punish game would be difficult when I play my friends I just 4 to 3 stock them to no end and I have an very good punish game expecially on fast fallers I've comboed my brother across the stage and back again a few times its shit like that that can be difficult to keep up with

it is hard to keep up with pretty much everything if you can't even control your character though witch is harder than it looks tbh it took me like a week to be able to wavedash consistantly and even then I wasn't good at it and I could onky hut l cancels like maybe 50% of the time l cancels are the most frustrating thing to learn because they're so damn hard to hut consistant but maybe like a month ir 2 ago I started hutting 100% of them most of the time I'll still miss ine here or there but its usually ni bug deal but sometimes it can literally cost a whole game

...

I don't get it

they're both annoying op characters

I thought meta kight wasn't even a top tiere and I don't think marth is op at all why not just gut gud :^)

I play with your sister "smash"

If you're actually looking for a decent game with more than three viable characters, try Rivals of Aether.

It's closer to melee than the others, but it has a few system changes to make it play faster and not as hard on your hands. We could always use more players.

I moved on to Sm4sh. It's not quite Melee, sure, but at least it's not Brawl. I main, in chronological order from 64 to 4, Fox, Marth or Roy, Marth, and Palutena. However, I use Jigglypuff when I play online because it's funny when people don't take me seriously and I kick their ass.

I hate when people say this shit in melee like half the cast is viable its just that the top tieres are way too much fun to play the game can be annoying and frustrating at times but literally everything you do is your own fault and the only real answer is to git gud which honestly takes a lot of time and experience

sm4sh isn't bad but honestly there is way more shit that frustrates me in that game than there are in melee I also think melee just spoils you with the movment and how crisp everything feels and when your hands are movin it feels fucking fantastic

there are 25 characters and imo like 12-14 of them are viable some may be harder than others to pull off but if you put enough time in and stick with the character you like its definitely doable people overexagerate how good some characters are like fox honestly he's nit that bad to deal with and he's a sick character that makes things exciting

...

when you get in higher level playing I think the list shrinks. For example…
Fox is too inconsistent to really "shine" :^)
Icees become better because people don't know how to fight them.
Falco is also really good because of his lasers and lower skill ceiling than fox, but his recovery is shit.
People who don't play enough jigglypuffs get rested on.
Falcon seem like a good character, since combos are easy with him, and even when hit most people won't be good enough to really fuck him up.
Luigi seems okay (his fucking nair).
I might be wrong on some or everything.

But even still, ness and kirby are my favorite characters and they're complete shit in melee, and I can't get good enough with young link Maybe I'll try pikachu.

that all has to do with the player.
climbers are pretty shit tbqh fam but they can work pretty much only because of wobbling and chain grabs
believe it or not falco is harder to play than fox. fox gives you so much shit for free and you can honestly play pretty brain dead he gets pretty much the easiest kills in the game and has a very good gimping tool (shine). he's faster and has better movement and has a pretty good chain grab on fast fallers. falco has to work a lot harder for his kills with his combo game and lasers aren't a big deal at like mid levels of play it only does like 2-3% and the hut stun doesn't mean much unless they're right infront of you when you get lasered.
true but at the same time literally nobody plays puff there really is like only one really good puff player
its kind of a joke at this point that falcon is low tier just because of how much he gets fucked by the spacies but the top falcons (ehich there are quite a few) do extremely well even swj almost had one of the hypest 3-0's on armada but ended up getting fucked. he's a very scarry caracter because 1 grab can mean death and 3 to 4 good hits can kill but he's super momentum based so it can be hard to get things started.
more than just his nair is okay he's pretty nuts dude I don't have many examples because I dont play him but just check out some good luigis abate is pretty sick.

ness and kirby are fun characters but yeah they're pretty garbage. if you really want to go for it amd put the hours in pika is a great choice he gets pretty much free gimps on spacies, his movement is great, has the easiest chain grab in the game that leads to a free kill, and has an amazing recovery that is practiclly impossible to edgeguard. if you want to see the highest level of play pika can currently reach check out axe his pikachu is insane and is really the only one at the moment.

s2j*
my grammer has been so bad. my b.

Would you double shine grab dat ass?

get out furfag

N64 today is homo as fuck. You guys drink PBR and suck each others dicks to hipster music too?

don't know what you're talking about 64 is actually pretty hype its slower paced at times sure but theres constant neutral interactiins going on until you can get that one hit that can extend into a crazy combo its much more exciting to watch than smash 4 which can be a complete fucking snooze fest at times

You probably use Linux unironicall and say how much easier it is than Windows.

what do you have against 64? its a pretty dope game honestly and I'm pretty amazed at how much depth is in the mechanics and meta for a n64 game not only that but its a good looking game for it's time

I was a Falco main in Melee until recently when I quit. I was very aggro and tech skill heavy but played like an idiot so I'd often lose to players who play super safe/lame. I also used to practice Smash 64 but didn't get to play other players too often since the scene is practically dead here in the UK. Usually just went into training mode and practiced combos with all the characters while listening to music.

Combos and combo videos were the main reason I kept playing for so long but I'm pretty much done with the scene now. The game's just not fun anymore and there are too many autists.

thats unfortunate dude. At this point I can't really imagine quitting just because if all the improvment I see myself making everytime I come back from a tourney. There are way too many times where I've felt exactly what you described where the game just doesn't feel fun anymore or even feels more like a chore than a video game but powering through and coming out of that slump for me feels very rewarding. I also really try not to think of how people play as "lame" I used to but I started realizing it was just me being an idiot and what they're doing is just being safe you literally have to play safe and defensive in melee especially with falco it may seem lame sometimes but dude once it clicked with me I realized I've been playing this game wrong for so long. try setting up defenses more with random turn around up tilts or bair walls wavedash back up tilt also works very well. you also really have to learn how to take advantage of falcos dash dance its underrated as fuck. Also make sure to check out what happened at dreamland ceo yesterday it might spark some inspiration for you it was extremly refreshing for me because it had some of the hypest games I've seen in such a long time and melee has felt kinda stale recently check out top 8 or at least losers finals and grand finals.

this shit was hype

anyone else know this feel?

Yeah I used to play way too much brawl with my cousin and we even used those terrible wiimotes lmao. He would always kick my ass because he was the one with brawl at his house so he played more than I did and then I ended up getting into melee and started getting decent and tried ti get him into it he liked it and thought the game was cool but never wanted to take it as seriously as I did and now he's kind of a dick head and we don't talk anymore

Are you the guy that posts those porn vids with weird titles, because these are the same.

I get what you're saying and a part of me wants to come back and improve but with my current situation it's just not worth it. There are no melee players in my area so if I want to play people, I have to catch a train to meet up with a group in another nearby town. Been doing this once a week for about a year and I haven't improved all that much. I make the same mistakes every week and its gotten to the point where I just can't enjoy myself anymore. I can beat my fair share of scrubs but anyone who actually knows how to play against the dumb aggro players like myself, can usually body me. And before you say it, I did try to get into netplay but it's just too damn laggy with the laptop that I have right now. If I had someone to play against on a more regular basis, I'd probably stick with it but for now, I'd rather fill my time with stuff I'm good at.

I do still keep up with the top player tournaments but I'm a Mang0 fan and it's not looking good.

Not me fam. Found those two (and these two) a while ago on Redd…uh I mean, someone sent them to me.

Anyone want to play online through Dolphin? I have class now but I'll be good to go in about 7 hours.

I get it dude but instead of being discouraged when you lose you should ask the better players for advice the last tournament I went to I was just getting bodied by every good marth and I noticed a marth player just practicing by himself and asked him if he wanted to play friendlies mostly so I could get some more practixe and little did I know this guy was actually one of the best players I've played I started asking him for advice and he actually helped me out a lot with the match up as falco and I actually started doing fairly well agaisnt him and the onky reason I would lose after that basaclly was bevause of stupid SD's

also I really dont have anything to netplay without lag either which sucks because I have to take a 30 min drive just to play with the good players in my state because theres basically no scene where I'm at

I'm a huge mango fan but things really aren't looking good for mango so far but I have a feeling he can bounce back from this. so far he's the only god to not win a tournament this year so you can't sleep on the kid.

I think its pretty ironic though that the set I linked was one of the most hype ones of dreamland even though it was m2k/hbox which is usually pretty campy and boring

I'm also going to honest with you my improvement hasn't just been from tournament experience as I rarely get to go I go maybe like once a month to the boss rush monthlies here in az and next month I'm going to runback but its mostly been through grinding tech skill and match ups through 20xx I literally play like 4 hours a day just on a crt and wii and I've gotten so consistent with lots of things and even discovered a lot of really sick punishes on my own that I never see used like with fox I like to do stuff like drill turn around up tilt into up air which combos really well and is consistant if you can hit the timing my falco punish game has also gotten pretty damn good on fast faller but I still need to work on neutral a lot

nope. me and my bros hang out once in a while and we grab some beers and sometimes tail. we talk about our careers, girls and money.

let me guess. he gets laid more than you and has a better social life?

>coming to Holla Forums to brag about your perfect life
Wow congrats, time to go back.

Pretty much but that doesn't mean he's not a douche he's the kind of guy thats always loud and obnoxious and if you say anything that goes against his opinion he turns inti a childish little bitch he also works out and likes to brag about it all fucking day he may get laid more and have an actual social life but I'd rather not turn into that

The one character I have the most difficulty against is Peach which sucks because the one Peach main who attends these group meetups is a total dickhead. The type who if I play friendlies with him, he'll just camp the ledge with Kirby or Game&Watch. So grinding out that matchup ain't happening and when I play his Peach in bracket, he'll just spam downsmash and turnips which just makes me want to kill myself. I've come close to beating him a few times but I always play so much worse in bracket than I do in friendlies. I mess up all my combos, get shield grabbed all the time and keep doing unsafe shit like double laser from the ledge. I've been given advice in the past but I just can't seem to take it. I just can't drop any of my bad habits. I can't even implement shine grab into my playstyle, despite how easy it is. My brain is just hardwired to either shine aerial or waveshine, so if I attack someones sheild, 9 times out of 10, I'm getting grabbed.

Went to a shop where people were playing smash
Shulk main
Lucario main
Cloud main
Zss main
We did ffa
In thre end it was either me or luc vs zss
And he was beyond good, making comebacks from 1 stock and 151 %against the location
I forgot how fun this game is, and why I like fighters in general

alright heres some of the realest advice I can give you right now. there are times where I've experinced similiar situations where it feels like you've hit a wall and you can't really learn anything new or fix any habbits. what you should do is just forget about your main for awhile and pick up a whole new character then when it feels like you've learned a decent amount try going back to your main and see if anything has changed. this helped me so much because I got to learn some character specific things that would cross over to my main and helped me realize what to do in that match up. having trouble with peach? why not either try her out or try someone that fucks peach I suggest fox, marth, or falcon. its hard to get over times like this and I feel like falcos always hit this wall which is why so many of them drop him for fox but trust me if you just stick with it it's very worth it.

if you also want to implement something new like shine grab you basically have to only be thinking about shine grab and doing it all the time until it starts becoming second nature and then you can start doing things like wavedashing in and shune grab to call out when they will sheild or even using double shine grabs which are pretty sick. if you don't want to get shield grabed stop hitting shield like an idiot unless you can apply perfect pressure, falcos shield pressure is a lot harder than it seems if you're not perfect 9 times out of 10 you're getting shield grabbed and don't use dair on shield its not safe. also double lasers are pretty fucking safe dide I hate it when people say "das not safe" because of the moon I love his marth but he's wrong just because stupid ass falcos use it wrong doesn't mean its not safe if its point blank yeah you'll just get punished you have to use it at the right distance for it to be good but man us it amazing mangos double lasers for the most part are actually pretty damn good its just that he starts to get greedy with it

if you want a good ledge option that is safe and has lots of variaty that you can get creative with besides ledge hop ariels or double lasers learn to ledgedash its actually fucking amazing and I guarantee it will catch people off gaurd. as of now hardly anybody is ledge dashing in tournament but the pros so its good to start doing that now I went into my first tournament ledge dashing and double shining shields and shut and then people actually started being kinda dicls tworads me and I'm pretty sure it was because my tech skill is pretty damn good but I'm not good at the game itself and some we're jealous pf my tech skill.

Well thanks for the advice. Still not to motivated to come back to the game as of right now but I'll try to keep what you said in mind if I do and try to stop playing like an idiot. I did actually start maining Falcon for a while before I quit but I still wasn't getting the drive I used to have that made me want to practice for hours and play whenever I can. If I can't get that back, there's little point in me coming back to the game.

I mean you're right but I feel like nobody really quits this game honestly they almosy always come back its just too hard to really quit but if you really are going to more power to you at the same time though who knows maybe you just need a break
