Serbs play the long game, accidentally. I say accidentally because there aren't any backroom underground meetings, it's just that the character of the Serbian people is geared towards long term national survival:
1. Extreme pessimism - Keeps them from breaking into pieces every time something bad happens. They celebrate defeats for example.
2. Concept of "normality" - Serbs have a concept of what is normal and what is not normal, this helps them maintain a national cohesiveness even under foreign occupation.
3. Spiteful character - They distrust media and always do the opposite of what they think the authority wants them to do.
4. Hero worship - Serbs have an obsession with hero worship and martyrdom. Similar to Muslims, but for nationalistic reasons, not religious.

#1 and #3 are extremely helpful under occupation, but kind of hurt them in peacetime and prevent them from developing.

Serbia was never a part of Austro-Hungary. It was its own independent kingdom with delusions of grandeur, thus WW1.

The first Yugoslavia (kingdom) was an absolutist monarchy under a serbian king. The result was that Slovenia and Croatia found themselves suckered into what was supposed to be a South Slavic brotier alliance/state but swiftly became a prison with a serbian warden. The atrocities committed against the Croats, ranging from economic (heavy taxation with no representation), assasinations of prominent croatian politicians, violent killings of peasents and confiscation of their property and so on resulted in… well, nothing good. Even in communist Yugoslavia Serbia leeched the fuck out of far more industrialized Croatia and Slovenia.

The wars in the 90s are entirely the fault of the Serbs. They wanted to be KANGZ but were never in control of their own passions or had anything to offer but oriental style despotism. The moment they seized power way back in 1918 they immediately started to act like tyrants.

The only true lesson here is that the Croats are immensly patient people and that you should leave them be. That's the only thing they ever wanted.
