The game looks like it's inspired by Mario, which means that the top right of the screen is where the points are displayed.
The number of lives should be in the top left next to the coins, but that isn't displayed.
Of course, this is the assumption that they're playing Super Mario World, which would fit with the fact that he's using a SNES controller. This would also explain the golden coins in the top left corner, since every level in the game had five special coins hidden throughout them. Of course, that also means that the lives, time left, and powerup box all aren't displayed when they should be.

If it was inspired by the original Super Mario game for the NES, then the lives wouldn't be displayed at all. But then the points are in the wrong spot and there would be no golden coins in the top left.

My guess is that he got the games mixed up together trying to remember what the screen in a Super Mario game looks like.

Assuming the 3 circles are supposed to represent lives, it could be better re-written as "I only start with 3 lives? Why so few?" or something along those lines. But even with that change it would still be a shitty comic, so I don't know if it could really be saved. I think it's a lost cause.

I think the dad is using the WiiU gamepad. (Artist should have made the controller bigger. It looks like the bottom half of a DS at that size.) Also the son says they're playing Smash. The dad just mentions why he prefers playing as Villager in Smash because Animal Crossing is more furry than StarFox I guess? (not sure what that has to do with fighting in Smash, but none of the foxdad comics make any sense)

Animal Crossing has been released on N64 (JP only), Gamecube, DS, Wii, and 3DS. The game featuring Isabelle was released for 3DS. There's technically a WiiU spin-off game, but a lot of people either forget it exists or want to forget.

That monkey is from webcomic called Love Me Nice. The setting is that cartoon characters living alongside normal human but still doing zany stuff like cartoon (imagine Who Framed Roger Rabbit but the cartoons now integrated with human). Most cartoons worked in entertainment industry and it became one big family business. The monkey is the son of a studio owner (Imagine Mickey as an aging mouse and his son with Minnie is ready to take over) and the story is more about the son decision to marry his manager/lover and trying to win his dad's approval. The comics posted above were when they are making one of those show.
