It's essentially a part time version of the army where every couple of years they might ask you if you want to serve overseas, and if you say no, then end of story. In the US Reservists are on a "cycle" and get deployed very frequently, typically once every 5 years or so. Multiple units are up during any given cycle and the "Best" unit of them is selected for the deployment.

French reservists might be completely different. I have no idea if that's the case, but it would seem reasonable.
