Those things have a shotgun like device for shooting water into a XD. I know there are also some explosives you can used to explosively disarm an XD. As it sounds, the bomb blows up the other one hopefully ripping the detonator and shit away from the explosives. It might even detonate the device, but it's used as a last resort. Also, since most explosives are secondary stage ones you need something like murc fulminate to initiate it. My best guess would a half a pound of RDX/good ol' tnt was used on the disposal unit.

Also, what I mean by the whole secondary/primary thing. It's better summed up by an analogy.

You can throw a grenade at C4 and not blow up the C4 because the explosives in the grenade are too weak to initiate the C4. But the grenade is violent enough to destroy the detonator, packaging, receiver, etc.
