To be fair, it is an annual. And Kingdom Come isn't really that great 20 years later. At best it's another showcase for Alex Ross' art.

I still think the comic the Patsy thread wrote was better, but it's a solid effort. Giant ghost deserved love.

I think Kingdom Come still holds up. I remember when I was a kid annuals would have one main story (normally part of some annual crossover like Atlantis Attacks) and one to three backup stories and some pin ups. The back up stories were always nice because they were off the wall diversions of short stories that had no place in the main books. Sometimes humor, some times just character pieces, sometimes real experimental. So in that respect, I do like the concept of this book.

But… just the concept. The thing about backup stories in old annuals is they were still done by real comic writers and artists, like a nice chance for the regular guys to cut loose and do something all their own. Having the annual here be mostly just outside artists shows that the talent pool at Marvel is completely dried up. Sad, really.

It's interesting how the fanfic inside the comic managed to contain actual humor, that would have been considered sinful as part of the actual comic, and had to be indulged in in an ironic way.
