Anecdotal evidence from myself; I lost about 5kg of weight (and I wasn't fat when I lost this weight, so can only speak for how much a person of standard weight may lose) by going vegetarian. I didn't notice any drop in strength while training, so it wasn't muscle, so I'm guessing it was excess fat. I later went vegan and didn't notice any further weight loss/gain.

Weightlifting = building lean muscle

Cardio does build muscle but it's not as effective as weightlifting
Weightlifting does burn fat but not as effective as cardio

Any exercise burns fat and builds muscle, your main problem is the diet.
Fix your diet and you'll see better results.

Fixed it for you, OP.

Atkins is a great diet. High protein means more gains in the gym. Cut most of the sugar from your diet and focus on greens. Take it easy on running if you aren't used to it so you can build up to a good half hour or more 5x a week.

Work out to get sore.

Anyone got a good barbell and dumbbell only routine for building muscle? I did Stronglifts for a few months but got to the point where I was no longer making progress. I want to build some muscle at home, but don't have machines.

I don't claim this is good, as it's probably shit because I have no idea what I'm doing, but it may give you some ideas; I do this at home using dumbbells and bodyweight, and I aim to do this every second day; every line break represents what I do in a set. The weight used is the same for all of it, so I tried to roughly make up the difference in how exhausted my muscles get through the number of reps, but it's pretty arbitrarily chosen. If there's anyone who knows more than me, any suggestions are more than welcome:

-10 Bicep curls x4
-20 Shrugs x4

-10 Shoulder press x4
-10 Deadlift x3

-10 Triceps extensions x3
-10 Wrist curls x3

-10 Dumbbell rows x3
-10 Squats x3

-15 Lying press x4 (a bench press on the floor)
-30 Sit ups x3

-20 Push ups x4
-30 Alternating knee plank tucks x3

-30s Flutter kicks x3

No. Squat first. Deadlift last.

Why is this?

Both work your legs and lower back, but DLs work your lower back more than Squats. This means that if you DL first then you have worked your lower back more have a greater chance of failing and injuring yourself during your squats.
