There are three writing scripts in Japanese. Hiragana ( ひらがな), Katakana (カタカナ), and Kanji (漢字)

Learn Hiragana first. There's 46 characters in that. If you can learn Hiragana, you'll also be able to read the Kun readings for Japanese.

After that, depending on how you grasp the language, you can either start learning Katakana (Used to translate the sound of foreign words in Japanese, and used to write the On readings of Kanji) or start learning Kanji like I did. Or hell, maybe even both.

Kanji is by far the most difficult though, so definitely start out with Hiragana and Katakana until you can read the characters by heart. It'll make reading and looking up kanji pretty easy.

And just so it doesn't drive you mad, learn to love kanji. Write it on paper with a brush or something. Really makes you appreciate the calligraphic nature of the language

For the Kanji part, which is the only difficult portion, look up AnkiSRS and Heisig method.

For Vocabulary, look up "Tae Kim grammar" (I think there's a pdf he hosts on his site).

Japanese is a lot of memorization (because kanji) but it's actually trivial to learn the grammar.

The hardest part is probably pronunciation, but since we're GLORIOUS WHITE MALES we don't actually need to have great pronunciation to get tons of tail (if that is your inclination).

Word of warning: easy japanese lays are generally low quality. If you want high quality shit (smart, not batshit), you have to have money and be fluent.

Do not marry a japanese woman unless you are alpha as fuck: they will make your life a living hell and/or divorce you (they WILL keep the kids). They decide where all the money goes.

I thought not? "Chi” is, according to Wikipedia, much more like Polish or Serbo-Croat "Ć", a much more palatal sound. "Shi" is to English "sh" as "chi" is to a hard English/Slavic/Average Standard European "ch". The same for "ji". I might of course be wrong, but my Polish version of a textbook written by a Japanese professor of a US university (Naoya Fujita) explicitly said they were the same as the palatalized Polish sounds Ć/Ś/Dź rather than Cz/Sz/Dż, et cetera. This might of course have been the translator fucking around, but the difference between those two sets of sounds is very obvious. Also, according to Wikipedia, in words like "kaji" there is a sound that sounds like a very soft Z. Google the article on the letter Ź and find the Wikipedia article on the sound it represents, you'll find Japanese in the "occurrence in world languages" table. I won't link it because I'm on a phone.
The Japanese "U" doesn't happen in English either, it's done with the lips unrounded.

On a final note, the clusters "ts" and "dz", which IIRC is an alternate pronunciation for Nip "Z", don't occur in English. Oh, and I've read in the Wikipedia article on Nip phonology that some speakers - don't remember if it's a dialect or a nationwide trend - have a tendency to nasalize vowels that come before an "n", sounding in effect a bit like Portuguese or redneck Poles. English doesn't really have this at all.
