Dave is very anti-censorship, ended up getting targeted by SJW hate machine during the rise of Milo in GamerGate. It's an anti-authoritarian story, not some alt-right comic.
Dave has a video on why he chose animals as the basis for his characters. He was not introduced to furries until after volume 1 came out, though now he is in heavy with them since they accepted him fast and hard.
Op is shit. The comic is about the mental projections of humans that guard them unknowingly from the dreamworld. Eldrich beings called nightmares seek to destroy life and Dreamkeepers fight them. In the setting, hundreds of years of corruption, totalitarianism, and and misdirection from nightmares have lead the society to become pussified almost communists that don't believe they are in any danger, but the Nightmares are readied for their final push to wipe out the Dreamkeepers. Cue story.

The details are that Whip and maybe Vi are getting plushes made in mass production for sale in the DK store, at cons, and maybe retail depending on how things go. Saw the prototype whip plush at Anthrocon and it was pretty well made.
