Gun shows are complicated if you don't want paperwork.

This is the infamous "gunshow loophole."

You go to a gun show. There will be vendors selling firearms. Buying from the vendor means getting it registered, so you don't want to buy it from a vendor.

But you'll see people walking around with firearms with price tags on them. These people are selling those firearms. Because you'd be purchasing the firearm from another individual and not a seller, there's no paperwork required in many states. So you go up to the guy, ask him if the firearm is indeed for sale and he will say yes.
Buy the firearm. Done.

If you want to sell at a gun show, there will be someone from law enforcement to check your firearm before entering with it. It will receive a seal, showing that it's unloaded and you can walk right in and sell the firearm to any individual you want.

That's how it works. Buying from a vendor at a gun show means you still have to get a background check. Buying from an individual means no paperwork.

You can also do this with some states' classified ads. Armslist used to be good, but it went to shit.

To add, person-to-person transfers usually don't require background checks in most states.

In my state, you can't sell a handgun this way, but you can sell any long gun you want that way.

You can buy a pistol or long gun from someone in Ohio, not a dealer, and nothing is needed.

Here in Michigan, if I want to buy a handgun from a person, not an FFA, I have to go to the police department and get a "Intent to Purchase" form and fill it out. The police do an extensive background check and I come back to retrieve my form. When I retrieve my form, I have 7 or 10 days (can't remember which) to purchase the pistol.
The alternative is to get my CPL, which requires classes and range time and costs about 65 bucks. Then I'm free to buy a pistol whenever from whomever I want and I can also conceal carry.
But we also have an open carry law, which means I only need to get the intent to purchase form and as long as I'm not concealing the weapon, I can carry it anywhere I want. This becomes tricky in a car, though. Carrying a loaded weapon in a car in Michigan requires a CPL.

There's so much red tape, it's crazy. Better off starting a commune in the hills of Kentucky and living off the land. Fuck gun laws.
