1) Lots of Mexicans do make a big deal about it. Somehow they blame whites in the US for it. I had a Mexican prof. for a history class years ago, and she was pretty angry about it.

2) The official ideology of Mexico is that Mexicans are mestizos, La Raza Cosmica - a race formed from the mixing of all the other races of mankind - and this makes them superior and the people of the future.

3) The "Mexicans" that weren't race-mixed into La Raza, the "indios," particularly the Maya in Yucatan and the south are still pretty salty about the conquest and genocide, and they never really stopped fighting. Even today the Zapatista rebels, while nominally communist, are much more of a Maya racial/ethnic movement than anything else.
