I started college studying science, and then switched to history and philosophy after two years.
I found history to be the most rigorous in getting students to think critically, to analyze the evidence and collect all the data. Certainly one of my philosophy tutors told me that history students had the best quality and most logically thought out essays. My history tutors always encouraged us to write anything we liked, as long as we backed up our arguments with good primary and secondary sources, which I did.
On the other hand I found the science department to be very sloppy. Nobody was challenged to think critically. People were handing in plagerised and half assed projects and no one was checking up on them.
