As someone else who cares about Rocketeer, this kind of thing just baffles me. They've done this kind of thing many times and it fails almost every time. The only reason Star Wars got a pass was because it's fucking Star Wars. The thing to look at here would probably be Red Tails. It was a movie about the all black Tuskegee Airmen. It had pedigree, it starred several notable black actors, it was produced and ghost directed by George Lucas. It totally failed, and George Lucas then blamed racism when its failure probably had nothing to do with racism at all. Even so, how could Disney look at that and think that an empowered black wymynz Rocketeer is going to fare any better?

I actually have been thinking that, when I see a movie I don't like, I should write the script for the movie I actually wanted to see. So that's progressing slowly.

But I also care about and understand comics much more, so I'd rather do a comic book. If I write a script, there will be rewrites, the director could be an idiot, casting might be bad… it'll be so far from my intention that I'm really only writing a script to make money. If I write a comic or book, I have a foundation for the story that is 100% mine, and if it happens to become a movie, I get paid for the bastardization of it. That and writing a script that isn't shit is really time consuming, at least for me. I would like to do it though, and I'd love to work with established ideas like the Rocketeer. But I don't know the chances of selling a script like that, I'd probably have to write a bunch of smaller things to get a name for myself first.

I don't know how I feel about this. I guess it's OK, considering that it's a sequel and they aren't replacing him outright but more so passing the mantle onto a new character. I just hope they bring back the original actor for a cameo at some point.

But they'll have to CG him to be only 6 years older than he was in the first movie instead of 27. I guess they could save him coming back for a sequel, but it seems odd to plan it for a time period where none of the original cast would be the right age.

They could throw something in about time travel or rapid aging. Some bullshit like that. Or they could use good old fashioned stage makeup. Or they could CG. They made Arnold look convincingly younger in some recent films, so it isn't impossible. They made RDJ look much younger in Civil War, too, and that was a Disney film.

Either way, I really want to see it. I don't care how they manage it. This was a pretty big movie to me in my childhood. I watched it all the time, played the shitty game based on it, and I'll give this one a chance if they'll throw him in.

But they don't put their brains to use to make a good product, instead they have their charts and graphs and everything is fine-tuned to create just the right amount of controversy. Basically The Rocketeer is this love letter to 1930s America and 1930s pulp fiction. The original comic and the movie sort of created this picture postcard idea of what the American 1930s were like.

So, clearly the intent with this soft reboot/sequel is to completely dismantle that idea by having the lead be a black woman during a time in American history where it was not necessarily a good thing to be one.
