I would say nerd culture doesn't exist anymore. Now it is just a marketing tool because everyone already knows the references or can be told it through a shitty movie that panders to them, and those idiots buy.

Nerd culture today is mostly about anime.

Stuff like Superman and Batman are done for a few movies and cartoons since everyone recognizes it, but it's just mainstream goofy stories rather than anything that could be considered niche.

It's not considered nerdy in the least to be a man of Batman movies, rather it's seen as perfectly normal since these stories were changed from being about out of this world goofy and fantastic stories into more kid friendly action movie stories.

Comic books though have been completely fucked in the US since it's still semi-profitable for the major comic book companies to print and sell comic books that sell about 20k of an issue. There just isn't much need to appeal to many readers if that's all you need to be considered a success. So writing stories that annoy people enough that they want to read to see what they fucked up this time can be enough to get by.

A bigger problem in my mind, is that many right wing people don't think much about putting their money towards things they want. Liberals are more than happy to throw their money at anything that panders to them so plenty crap is made for them, whereas conservatives are more reluctant to do such a thing which results in much less media being produced for them.
