While I appreciate and understand your well-reasoned affection for book Brienne, personally I'd say there isn't much of a difference between general ASOIAF Brienne and GoT Brienne fandom. Naturally, the majority of character subtleties are lost in translation to scren, but if you were to describe the novel version in a sentence of 10 or less words and then proceed to do the same for television counterpart, wouldn't you end up with something very similiar? Sometimes it's the extent that differs, not essence.

But that's the thing, only the barest sense of the character is adapted; Brienne is a good fighter and a woman trying to make it in a man's vocation, and she can be a little guarded. That's all that made it in the adaptation. No fun fantasy quest for revenge/loyalty, no fun/cool little band of rogues, no philosophy behind learning to murder for war, no character development/expanding upon where we see the true Brienne (vulnerable, tender, inexperienced) behind Jaime's opinions of her…

This has all been done because the show thought they could adapt Jaime/Brienne's arc in season 3 by making up their own OC character of Locke because they thought the Bloody Mummers were too cartoony for TV - and I'll give them that! - but they could have at least adapted them. I thought Septon Ray was an excellent adaptation of Meribald/The Elder Brother for TV, so why couldn't they do this several seasons earlier? Because it means they would have had to pay for more actors, that's why.

But you know what? I don't care, because even the bare bones of AFFC Brienne would've been better than what we got.

I don't mean to sound harsh, I really don't, but Brienne's writing/the whole Locke bullshit really hits a sore spot with me because it lays bare how shitty D and D are as writers when you let them do it by themselves.

Stannis' death also makes me feel this way; there was obviously a barebones GRRM skeleton plan they were following there, but what they tried themselves ended up a poorly executed travesty.
