The mask itself seems to contain elements of voodoo, norse symbology and possibly demonic iconography. Loki being imprisoned in it is one possibility, but never outright stated in the comics.

There's also an element of imagination required to use the mask, as Big Head's main nemesis Walter was unable to wear it because he's completely grounded in reality.

The movie was nothing like the comics. The comic was just another edgy gorefest with an invincible retard who goes on a rampage without any stakes or risk involved.
At one during the 90s that was really popular for some reason, especially with smaller publishers like Chaos! or Image comics.

The Carrey film was fantastic but I wish they would adapt other stories from the Mask into serious horror films.
