Tor is mostly used by criminals, and it's very hard to find a legitimate use case for it.

However you should still be glad it exists in times of hate speech legislation and governments overstepping their intended bounds. If you're completely opposed to it, you could see it as a necessary evil.

My dad has to fly several thousand miles away for work, and because IT perpetually has sticks up their asses VPNs don't work there normally, and the normal internet there works off of a whitelist system, for some reason, without it actually needing to be a high-security site. The only real thing that has worked for him so far for shitposting on the internet is Tor, and while he isn't tech literate enough to really understand things like p2p or i2p, he's able to follow the instructions of "keep flash and java off and don't download jack shit".
I'll accept that it's a fringe use case, but you can't just dismiss everybody that could use Tor like that.

Of course you can backdoor a standard, I'm rather sceptical of the Tor standard myself (wild mix of different crypto for no apparent reason, elliptic curves, 1024-bit RSA).

TCP/IP is a standard with a multitude of implementations. The standard will be read by a lot of people and it's considerably harder to put a backdoor into a networking protocol than to do the same with a cryptographic one.

Afaik Tor has one implementation, written originally by a US agency, and currently consists of 220k lines of C. It's not hard to hide a fatal "bug" in there. It's also going to be read by a lot less "important" (read: dangerous to backdoor efforts) people because the Wikipedia method of error detection is a complete delusion.

Serious question: By whom is SELinux audited? An audit is only as good as the auditor after all, and if they are mostly on the NSA's payroll in some way, that doesn't really say a lot.
