Moving to US, need help with privacy

Switzerland nigger here, moving to US for Uni. In Switzerland we never had to worry about privacy or anything, but here I heard the cops can look into your laptop if you just pass by them.
Can anybody tell me the basics to keeping my shit private. I already checked out the sticky. Should I invest in a VPN also should I cover the inside of my backpack with tinfoil to stop people from hacking inside my laptop?
Any help is needed and sorry if I have bad english

I don't know the current landscape of VPN's because I've basically stuck with the same one for years. I use NordVPN, but there are dozens and dozens of them now to choose from. Pirated shit for three years in my college dorms and never got caught with it. Browser is meaningless.

As for your laptop, get a business laptop and replace the DVD drive with a hard drive bay, and put Windows on it. Make the Windows HDD the first in boot priority. Have your other HDD with Linux on it, but you have to manually go into the boot order menu to choose it. Shit won't pass forensics, but it will pass our fucking stupid police.
