In Aristotle, dialectic was used in the sense of logos, or logic. Which was basically proof-counterproof – basically the a progenitor of the Scientific Method we know today. Socratic dialogue.

After Hegel, the "dialectic" took on much deeper ontological and metaphysical connotations. For Hegel, there was basically a collective consciousness, typified or even controlled by an intellectual class, or at least usually dispersed in that manner, which became the ordering structure of the human universe. A lot of social constructionists come through Hegel. For Marx, this took on a material turn (as opposed to ideational), where he posited a "dialectic" of different classes of people against one another, based on control/ownership of the "means of production."

Anyway, a Greek dialectic basically means logic as we know it, or the scientific method - which, can be seen as sort of metaphysical in its own way, but is more of an epistemological/methodological claim, at least in its contemporary interpretation. Whereas, a Hegelian or Marxian "dialectic" is a very deep ontological/metaphysical claim about the nature of society, the human condition and the nature of progress/"History"
