Why should I install linux? no really...

Why should I install linux? no really. all I see are people telling me i should install linux and now looking at possible jobs (i already have a job I'm more than happy with but I like to see whats available), knowing linux is a requirement. I can't help but feel like windows and linux are extremely similar in capabilities except windows can run games but costs money unless you keep getting free upgrades (I've only paid for windows once). I'd lose a lot of stuff I've built up to this point but I'm sure theres ways around that. So the only reason I can see making the switch is "Just Because" because already having one or the other appears to be a good enough reason to stay with your current OS. And I'm sure you guys are tired of seeing crap like this.

There's really no reason for you to switch to Linux, you don't care about open sauce and Windows works for you

thank you, I know it may seem like confirmation bias but I really needed to hear that

nice blog OP

Back to Reddit, cuck

There's no reason to use Linux if you're not a dev, sys admin or already of the FOSS persuasion. If you want to learn it for the sake of broadening your abilities, go for it. Any of the top 5 largest distros will work just fine and allow you to generally grasp the *NIX environment.

Well, you now have a reason: you may be able to get a job.
Though, keep in mind that installing an easy linux distribution like Ubuntu is not the same as "knowing" linux.
It really depends on what you need but if it's kernel stuff you need to look into OS developent and maybe write a simple driver or something yourself, or if you just need to know your way around the system install some headless distro in a VM (or use the terminal in a "noob-friendly" distro) and figure your way around how the system works, install some software, configure an HTTP server and database or something. Making your own Linux From Scratch can be an educative experience, but is very tedious, and not recommended unless you have the time/like it.

There's another reason: Some people just don't like the way windows works and prefer how linux works. A lot of users of arch/gentoo/other such distros don't know jack shit about development, but just like the customization options/how the system works.

There is one more reason to add if you're of the paranoid persuasion: Windows might be backdoored.

No one has ever proven it well except for maybe Windows 10, but there is a lot of circumstantial evidence like that secret NSAKEY key.

Even in that case I wouldn't main Linux unless you want to/like Linux. Dual-boot or buy a laptop for that if you must.

Because unlike Windows it doesn't break every five minutes and take up all your resources. There's a reason why it's the OS of choice for servers and Windows isn't.

Microsoft owns Pando Networks, famous for the malware/botnet Pando Media Booster.
Windows Update in Windows 10 utilizes P2P by default, most likely the same P2P technology used by Pando Media Booster.
Essentially it turns your PC into a zombie host server, wasting your bandwidth serving updates to other computers.
This also means Windows Update might be utilized later to spread malware through the P2P system via 0days.

I'm thinking about installing Windows 7 again because while Win10 just werkz, all this orwellian data snooping is pissing me off.

No, there really is no reason to use Linux or FOSS-compliant software when all computers are pretty much backdoored at the hardware level.

Why do you still trust Microsoft with your data? Why not just install Linux?

This is what you sound like.
Even if you're right, that's stupid approach. Security isn't a binary state, it's a scale where you have to balance it with costs.

While security certainly is something to consider, with all the ransomware floating around, the big reason why I use linux is that it's just better at many things. And not just scripting, automation and customization. Even X11/DEs are better ... whenever I'm forced to use Windows I really do miss stuff like middle click paste, ability to scroll inactive window, mouse-down showing context menu and mouse-up selecting menu item, or virtual desktops (though the last one finally is in W10 afaik). Windows is just so... clunky.

you mean because of all the off topic shitposting?

Not the other guy, but porn. Hentai games only work in Win 7 and 8.

Linux is more customizable, but whether or not your care is very subjective of course. The other reasons are FOSS, gratis, no built-in spying, but if you don't care about that...
I also think it's easier to use for a lot of programming-related shit, but that's again purely subjective. I do a lot in the terminal and Linux's is just completely superior. However, most people don't use the terminal a lot so I can see how that might not matter to you in the slightest.

It's really good for advanced usage and autistic levels of ricing.

It's free (as in free of cost) and open source, and so is most of its software, which is convenient, because it makes installing things easy. Software is packaged, and you can install thousands of programs using the same simple process from a centralized trusted source. It's updated using the same system, which is also used for OS updates, so all software stays up-to-date without update checkers running in the background at all times like some Windows software has.

It can be XP-tier lightweight without being XP-tier old and outdated. This is great for older computers.

Literally every part of your system has an alternative. There are a lot of "desktop environments" to pick from, so you can make your user interface work like Windows or OS X or any of a dozen other things.

It tends to do what you ask instead of what it thinks is best for you. No more nagging for reboots after updates and eventually forcing them like Windows 10 does.

You don't have to ditch Windows to use Linux. You can easily set up a dual boot, where you pick between Windows and Linux when you start your computer. Trying it is free and easy.

See for yourself. MUH FREEDUMS aside, I'll never use the bloated, locked down, poorly designed piece of shit known as Windows ever again.

It really was a revelation to me. Rather than ask yourself, "why should I switch to linux?", you should ask yourself, "what does Windows do for me that other operating systems don't?"

You should install GNU/Linux because it gives your computing more freedom.
If your job/income depends on Windows, keep it on a separate computer apart from your personal stuff, and stick to Win7, don't upgrade to Win10 and don't install botnet updates.

Because you're curious, otherwise you wouldn't be asking the question. Use Virtualbox or something, so you can fuck around without breaking anything. As for the differences:

Better hardware support, because all the companies target the largest audience
More vidya, because vidya is made for it because it's the largest audience
Better for programming with .NET and other Microsoft tools.
Everything's heavily integrated together. Companies have a set standard to code towards
Costs money

Better hardware support out of the box, because most distros have all the drivers you need from the start
Less vidya. It's improving, and WINE exists, but it's still not as good as Windows
Better for programming with lower level languages, like C. Distros make Perl and other professional languages available easier.
Everything is modular. Swap out whatever you want
Generally doesn't cost money

Funny you should say that everyone wants Linux as a requirement for a job. Everywhere I look uses Windows tools for everything, so my fancy Linux fuckery is useless

NSA pls go

NTFS is shit, drivers are more painful than on Linux, can't change the environment that keeps getting worse, all good windows software is nagware, slower, oh god the menus are so bad now. Most importantly though, besides muh freedoms, is that it doesn't have fucking package manager. Package managers make finding development libraries easy and fuck and keep everything up to date and standardised by the standards your distro holds packages to. Software doesn't need to add bonnet naggy shitty updaters into everything.

Why the fuck would you lose anything?
Surely you know that you can transfer files to other storage devices.

You do have backups, right?

Don't
Most linux programs are made by autists and don't have a GUI

...

Pretty much pic related. There are a whole bunch of objective reasons to use it - it's more lightweight, it's faster, it's more stable, it's more secure, it doesn't spy on you, it's more customisable, and so on. Let's be real though, those aren't the reasons that 90% of us installed in the first place. We got started because we're a bunch of nerds, and Linux is a far more enjoyable system to use than Windows

Actually, I installed it because it had some software that was easier to install on Linux.

Pretty much, except that Linux does have some games of its own and there are versions that do cost money. Also see the pic here: Linux is extremely customizable to a much greater degree than Windows, and in the process of customizing it you're going to learn a lot more about the operating system works. It's actually easier to learn than Windows by virtue of the fact that you have to learn about it along the way of using it, opposed to Windows where you more or less have to go out of your way to learn anything because there's just no incentive to go messing around with critical files.

Balance this:

Most normal citizens are unaffected by the security state.

"install gentoo" only turns off M$ shill. You need to forgo using google, amazon, apple and other things that make it convenient to live in this century.

That said as a society if everyone moved to FOSS shit the cost/reward would be drastically different. If everyone ditched products because :botnet: we could solve the botnet problem.

The argument to go FOSS as a civic duty to help the next 1k years not be orwell and huxley on steroids is a fairly sound one imho.

...

Because using the terminal and compiling is fun

Don't switch. Linux is trash for 99% of use cases.
youtube.com/watch?v=ggEUx-wS0ms

Noob friendly distros don't have that.
is more efficient than GUIs.

Linux is just fine and dandy as a daily driver and it runs a lot of games on Steam fine.

Why would you want something so finnicky and unstable as a daily driver.

Running Arch Linux with bspwm and lemonbar, didn't touch a config file in the past 3 months.

Yeah but the initial configuration time you spent is more config fuckery than anyone will ever do on windows and mac.

Just to approach their stability, you had to put in more work than they ever will need to.

What do you mean by this? There's no single distro that has official pre-compiled packages for every program, and there's no distro that stops you from compiling things either.

Depends on how complicated what you're trying to do is and how often you need to do it. It's not a general rule.

And strictly speaking, it's the command line that's often more efficient, not the terminal. You can have a terminal without a command line and a command line without a terminal. Curses programs are less efficient than their GUI equivalents (but more flexible in the way you run them).

Because Linux offers increased freedom and doesn't spy on you the way Microsoft does. Windows has really been going right down the crapper.

If being /g/ just means not being an autistic freetard, then that's a major improvement.

The difference between Windows and Linux is comparable to the difference between English and Orwell's "newspeak". By making it very difficult to use any kind of interface except Windows widgets, it restricts the way you think about your programs and it restricts the way developers can think about presenting information and receiving input.

Consider: Emacs vs. MS Word. Word is easier for people who don't want to spend more than an hour learning to use a document editor, while emacs (or vi or whatever) work best if you keep learning new features as you use the program.

To put it another way, one is designed for secretaries who use excel every day but don't know how to call functions, and the other is designed for people who use their brains and learn how to use their time efficiently so they don't get stuck being a secretary for life.

Take your pick.

That work pays off well by giving me a more stable desktop than both windows and homosex.

A lot of normies won't compile shit in their lifetime is what I'm saying.

Who the fuck cares what you do with you're life OP. Suck Wangblows cock the rest of you are neutered days for all we care heh.

You're right. pretty much every software in Windows must use COM/DCOM/COM+/RPC at some point which is the shittiest thing I have ever worked with, and you are forced to use Microsoft provided interfaces because developing your own would be far too much work. It also makes it completely unportable to any other OS.

Windows is pretty cozy. If you aren't paranoid about the botnet then there's not much reason to get rid of it. It is a fucking pain to reinstall and move around to different systems though.

Windows is pretty cozy. If you aren't paranoid about the botnet then there's not much reason to get rid of it. It is a fucking pain to reinstall and move around to different systems though. No official package manager but Ninite and others are *almost* as good.

There are very good reasons some programs do not have GUIs at all.

catb.org/esr/writings/taoup/html/ch01s06.html

I am still relatively new to Unixes so correct me if I'm wrong as I try to explain why this is awesome.

An example: grep is a program that searches and returns results from a text input. The input can be from any program, file/directory listing (ls), version control (git), file contents (cat), etc. This way programs can easily use each others. Ag silver searcher does the same thing as grep but is said to be a lot faster. So I can use either one for same purpose with any text input. Let's say I want to search file and directory list. I can use the command "ls" to print the list. If I want to search for specific file in the current directory, let's say "examplefile.html", I can use grep or ag to filter the output of ls with command:

ls | grep "examplefile.html"
OR
ls | ag "examplefile.html"

What if I want to search for contents of a file? "cat" returns the contents of a given file, so lets search that instead.

cat "examplefile.html" | grep "Site title"
OR
cat "examplefile.html" | ag "Site title"

I'm still pretty new to Unixes, but I've already seen how incredibly powerful the philosophy behind it is. It's amazing how you can chain and combine programs together, thanks to how most applications accept and emit text streams.

And nothing prevents you from creating or using a GUI for specific program. In fact, this becomes very easy, as you can get all your GUI content from the CLI (command line interface) output. Git is a great example here. Its base is used through CLI, but it has several different GUI implementations. Even many IDEs have created a GUI to use Git

I just get really hyped after I saw and learned all of this about Unixes. I'm amazed how clever and long the philosophy/tradition behind it is and I wish I had found about all this sooner. Oh, and terminals are really pleasant to use in Unixes, compared to Windows.

(More experienced users can correct me if I was wrong on some parts).

You are completely correct. That being said, "cat | grep" is cat abuse. People who take themselves too seriously (so... a great deal of Holla Forums) would disapprove of this, because the cat isn't neccesary.

Stop doing this, please for the sake of humanity.

Linux is way better for dev stuff, I mean WAAAAAY better than linux

Anyway, what windows apps you use that you can't get on linux op?

With a Windows job you will never fully understand what you're doing. You will never have control over your career. You'd live a more fulfilling life flipping burgers, because that fills an actual need. Windows is just manufactured problems that don't need to exist in the first place.

It's kinda late for that. Unless you don't update at all the latest updates will probably have included some of win10 problems including the annoying attempts to upgrade. The best move was to stop updating win7 some time before win10 got released.

I have never met a Linux user that was a healthy weight, mentally stable, and not a virgin. That's all you need to know about Linux.

To be able to feel superior to users of other operating systems- why else?

what?

what, you mean like you're doing right now?

Actually most H-games and indeed doujin games in general are written for Windows XP.

Now LibreOffice Writer vs. Office 2007 and up Word. I absolutely consider LibreOffice Writer easier to use than dealing with that inefficient piece of fucking shit ribbon interface that originally took me months to re-learn all the nuances of advanced document preparation that were easier to get at in past versions of Office.

Well the problem is how many fucking autist authors outright refuse to create an accompanying GUI to use their program. I agree with the philosophy of basics first, but if you want people to actually use your program who aren't all tinkerers with a ton of free time on their hands to learn syntax and shit then you need to make a GUI.

Yeah, this is the last time I check this place. I know it was bad a year ago, but Jesus fucking Christ the last few months went to shit. Holla Forums has been nothing but a wash of blogs, meta-threads, and tech support. Fuck this place.

Happened to Holla Forums too.

Well user, where to go then?

Do you report the tech support?

still dreaming of the nntp chan promised land. until then endchan.xyz has the fastest Holla Forums boards

I knew I held on to this for a reason.
Whatever.

In Windows, many Japanese games need to be run under Japanese locale. This guide will show you how to do so in Wine so you can play them on Linux. I'll assume you have both Wine and the game you want to play installed. All terminal commands should be entered without quotes unless specified. This guide is made with Ubuntu and its derivatives in mind.1) Open a terminal (usually Ctrl + Alt + T)2) Enter "locale -a". If 'ja_JP.utf8' isn't listed, you'll have to install it. Otherwise, skip to step 5.3) Enter "sudo locale-gen ja_JP"4) Enter "sudo locale-gen ja_JP.UTF-8"Now we're going to make a script so you don't have to launch the game through the terminal every time. This is easier than it sounds.5) Open a simple text editor (like Mousepad) that will let you save as any filetype.6) Copy and paste this into the editor. Keep the game path in quotes when you replace it:#!/bin/shcd "~/.wine/drive_c"LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 wine "/game/folder/path/here/game.exe" "$@"7) Save it with any name you want, just make sure it ends in '.sh'. For example: Molest Quest 2k15.sh8) Right-click the file you just made and make sure it's allowed to run as a program, probably uner a 'Permissions' tab. You may not have to do this, but it's best to check. It should run. Now you can fap to anime tiddies on a free OS.Shell scripts are plain-looking, but the simplest way to launch games. If you want icons, install 'Wine Launcher Creator' to make '.desktop' files.NOTE: Some games may require you to use a Japanese time zone. This is rare, though. I've never personally come across one.--------------------Monster Girl Quest, and its English translation, is a bit more of a pain in the ass. Either the text is unreadable (scrambled or shown as boxes), or it crashes on the Kraken video. Since I can't personally diagnose your problem, we're going to do what I did: shotgun all the fixes and hope for the best.Open that terminal and let's get to it.1) Install winetricks by entering "sudo apt-get install winetricks".2) When that's done, enter "winetricks quartz". It's over 100 MB, don't freak out.3) Next, enter "winetricks takao" and let it install. 3b) This actually didn't work for me. If this fails for you, just search for "takao-fonts-ttf-003.02.01.zip", download it and extract the fonts to "/home/USERNAME/.wine/dosdevices/c:/windows/Fonts/'.4) Enter 'wine regedit' in the terminal. In the registry editor, navigate to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Fonts\Replacements". If you don't have this path, make it. (Edit > New > Key)5) In 'Replacements', create a new string value. The name doesn't really matter, but you should set the value as this, WITH quotes:"MS ゴシック"="TakaoMincho"6) Look for the fonts "MS Gothic" and "MS Mincho" and put those in Wine's Fonts folder. If you have an existing Windows installation you can just copy those over.7) To fix the Kraken video, download this file and extract it to your game folder.mediafire.com/download/xk6id5w0f01kmu7/MGQPart1NoVideo.rar8) Your ass isn't done yet. Open up WINE's congifuration menu, and set mon_que.exe to run in a virtual desktop under the 'Graphics' tab. You can change this to WINE's default or just do it for MGQ. To get rid of all the blue space around the game's window, go to MGQ's Config menu and click 'Fullscreen'. I don't know if there's a way to run it in actual fullscreen without breaking the text.Happy fapping.

There is no reason. It's just a bunch of autistic faggots that want you to remove your ability to do anything worthwhile on a computer but shitpost on an imageboard.

...

Putting quotes around ~/.wine/drive_c stops it from working (~ is expanded by the shell). You don't need to put .sh at the end of the filename, it just helps with identifying what kind of executable the file is.

Oh, come on. There's nothing cozy about that piece of shit of an interface.

Except the presentation and intuitive GUI of the older Windows versions, which plenty of Linux DEs borrow heavily from. There are increasingly fewer advantages to using Windows nowadays, but the old releases excelled in those areas.
