The truth is that symbols matter, and modern life is bereft of them. Associating a symbol to an idea gives power to that idea somehow. It's psychologic, but don't read that as "It's bullshit", but as "It's a major function of the psyche".

Symbolism is a form of kinship and strength for ideas. This is the reason I looked for vague designs; because the use of something like a swastika has such negative connotations to it that convincing people to join you is almost impossible. But the use of something like the Celtic cross is different, because it doesn't hold the vast proposed idea of radicalism.
I'm gonna say go with something relevant to your culture. As an example, I'm a french canadian, so my symbol is the fleur-de-lys.
