Let's look at pre-colonial Africa, when Europe was in the slump of the middle ages.

Africa had no Black Death.

Africa had no political vacuum from the fall of the Roman Empire or a similar civilization.

Africa had no oppressive central religious authority such as the Vatican actively promoting fundamentalism and discouraging critical thought.

Africa did not have the overcrowding that Europe had - it was a HUGE continent with vast tracts of land unused and unexplored.

Africa had an unrivalled abundance of natural resources that no one had yet made the slightest dent in.

Africa had a monopoly on the largest land mammal in existence - the African elephant - which if domesticated and trained for war (yes this can be done with elephants, see Alexander's failed invasion of India), would have thoroughly trounced the cavalry of any of their neighbours.

They had timber enough to build a navy that could dominate both oceans their coasts opened onto.

And in all the many centuries they were left to their own devices, they remained a collection of largely nomadic hunter-gatherer societies (the few exceptions to which, such as the "kingdom" of "Great" Zimbabwe, never advanced to even a Bronze Age equivalent before dying out).
