The thing is, the DNC has never ignored the popular vote/popular candidate like this before. In 2008, democratic voters hated Hillary, and Hillary was duly replaced with Obama. Nobody knew Obama, so nobody was against him, and they supported him because anything was better than McCain in their perspective.
Plus, Obama hinted that he'd institute single-payer healthcare, which Dem voters really wanted, and by the time he shoved through the nightmare that is Obamacare, it was too late to do anything about it. Trust me, Dems don't like to admit it, but they're DEEPLY disappointed in this healthcare "reform". THE MOST POSITIVE THING I've heard Dems say about Obamacare is "at least it's better than nothing".
Also, 1st nigger president seemed like a valuable goal to Dem voters. The DNC thought they'd score another win with 1st woman president, but they underestimated how much democrat voters (and everyone else) hates Hillary.
Dems have been voting AGAINST Republicans rather than FOR Democrats for DECADES. The last candidate they actually liked was Bill Clinton during his first term back in the 90s. They didn't have their own Ron Paul to wake them up to corruption within their own party.
This time, democratic voters have a candidate they actually like (Sanders), and the DNC is trying to shovel a candidate they already rejected back in 2008 onto them. That's why they're only noticing the problem within their party NOW.

In the beginning of the race before anyone knew who he was, he was asked to pledge to support whoever the democratic nominee will be. He said that if he himself is the democratic nominee, he will support the democratic nominee. He has even clarified (a month or so ago) that he will not endorse Hillary. He's even said within the past two weeks that he will not tell or encourage his supporters to vote for her under any circumstances.
However, when pressed on the issue of supporting her or not, he said he personally would only give her an endorsement (not campaign for her) if she were to add a nationwide healthcare system to her policy (which is never going to happen).
