Once again I ask of Holla Forums to provide me with some reading material regarding an existential crisis I'm going through. I've come to the conclusion that reading up on how to solve the problems I'm about to describe is going to be the first step in bettering myself as a person. Please point me in the right direction.

Making people upset on the internet isn't something I seek out to do. For example, before sharing the occasional image or video link in one of the IRC chatrooms I frequent, I always try to evaluate whether or not it's going to offend people. I believe this to illustrate an example of my social behavior on a broader scale; typically I'll make decisions based avoiding negative social consequences or based on my (often wrong) predictions of how people will react. It's very difficult for me to understand the mechanics behind how or why something is morally wrong, so I try to base my morality on public opinion.

But basing my morality on popular opinion feels like a losing battle, not only because I'm bad at reading social cues, but because it's a fundamentally flawed way to treat ethics. Popular opinion doesn't mean anything when I take into account the idea that everyone has their own worldview, life experience, or ideological subscription. If this is the case, my refusal to examine why I personally feel something is right or wrong puts me in a position where I lack any sort of personal integrity whatsoever and my own worldview becomes so cognitively dissonant that I can't go about saying how I feel about anything without constantly second guessing myself.

It's difficult for me to ascertain if my tact or self-awareness has improved over the past decade. My maturity definitely hasn't. My political views do seem to change a lot, but have they ever changed? Every time I post about politics on the internet I feel like I'm swimming against a stream because I'm afraid if I tell the truth about my thoughts on certain issues, people will dismiss me as a wicked person who can't into rationality instead of bothering to engage with me to debunk an argument I've made.

Evidently my capacity to understand the intentions behind people's actions is impaired, and I'll see someone as being intentionally malicious, when, more often than not, they're doing what they think is right. But this is the internet we're talking about. Other people seem to take an opportunistic approach when I make myself vulnerable and everything seems to bite me in the ass.

I don't see myself as a virtuous person in the slightest. If I can say one thing about myself it's that I really don't purposefully try to upset people. My intentions aren't selfish but they're also not malicious. I just intend to be a good person, regardless of how other people receive it.
