If one day for some reason you end up on a government list and you're considered a suspect or a threat then the authorities could check the NSA database to see if they can associate your name with your previous e-mails to build a profile.

(Maybe it's useless I don't know but I have only one or two e-mail addresses in which I use my name, to buy stuff online, etc. and I have a couple of other e-mail addresses that I use for other purposes.)

I'm sure their system isn't perfect but the NSA's technical capabilities were considered a just a conspiracy theory for years. Now with the Snowden documents a lot of what was considered just a conspiracy theory turned out to be true and verifiable. That's the difference between before Snowden and after Snowden.
