Let us not forget that when Guts had sex with Casca, she was still a virgin, and she probably never even kissed Griffith, because as you said, he never cared about her. What even is the appeal of Berserk? It's the most boring and predictable shit I have ever read AND watched. Every single confrontation outside of the select few with Griffith just boils down to Guts winning because he's Guts and full of virgin with rage anger.

How did this trash get such praise? It reads and views as the shittiest of fanfics where the main character is just a self insert of the author and the bad guys are personifications of his bullies in school. At least most other shitty fanfic is riddled with bizarre syntax and spelling errors that occasionally gets a chuckle out of you.

I don't think that the manga has gotten worse, but rather that there has been a significant change in tone and atmosphere. For this I will analyze a few arcs and most of Gut's JRPG party. Before that, I should note that I haven't finished the manga yet, right now I am at the part where Guts just defeated the sea god and we meet the mermaids. Also it might get quite long and full of autism, you have been warned.

First of all let's take the first arc, the Black Swordsman arc. Here we have Guts and Puck. In this arc Guts is very edgy, doesn't want anyone to touch him, wants to kill monsters and avoids human contact, basically edge incarnated. We do learn that he does actually feel regret for some of the people who got killed(the girl who was possessed by those ghosts and the ugly alchemist who got executed). He is the main character and right now his motivation is "I have to kill demons".
Then we have Puck. A question, I will keep bringing up is Why is he with Guts? I am not referring to story reasons, because the author planned months, maybe even years ahead for a character to join Guts, and he can easily give a story explanation for why the character is with Guts. What is important is to understand the character's role as in what he contributes with both his skills and personality. Puck, right now is the designated healer. Why is that important? Well because now Guts can break a few bones, loose a lot of blood, almost get killed, but it's ok, because Puck can heal him with his magic dust. What is even more important, is that he needs to balance out Gut's edge, of course there has to be a balance which has shifted more and more to the comical side. Again Guts is edge incarnate, and we need a few jokes and smiles from time to time, because it wouldn't make sense for Guts to be cracking up jokes like he is Peter Parker. Again there has to be a balance, and I will get back to him later.

Then we have the golden age arc, I won't go into too much detail, since it was the time Guts was the happiest and it's mostly to explain why he is so edgy and doesn't want anybody to touch him(he got raped when he was a child, he got betrayed by his father, and then by his best 'friend' Griffifth). Most of his friends are dead, and the only ones alive are that child who is with the blacksmith's daughter and Casca. Why is Casca with Guts? Well her role is to remind Guts of his journey(to kill Griffifth for what he did) and to keep his humanity in check(he can't go berserk, because he might hurt Casca). Of course this is very hard for Guts, and we see him bitting her tits and chocking her with his hands. Her personality is that of a retard/infant, and it's mostly used to reflect the fact that Guts wasn't able to protect her from all those demons and from Griffifth raping her. Even he doesn't know if he should bring her back to her former self or not, because she will remember the hell that was the eclipse. Most importantly she is Guts' love interest.

The next arc is Conviction: The Lost Children, where Guts has to kill hundreds if not thousands of elves insects, only to learn that they were actually children. It's only Guts and Puck, this is where he starts accepting Puck as a companion(after probably weeks of traveling). It's still edgy, since he is basically killing and burning all those children. He does have some remorse from killing them, but in the end he has to do it, in order to survive. We can say that it's still edgy.

Then we have Tower of Conviction and we meet some of his future companions:Isidro, Farnese and Serpico. The arc itself, does get a bit fedora tipping with gods and all that shit, and it ends with Guts(or someone else, I can't remember) saying that God is inside everyone, and it's better to act than pray. It has quite a lot of demons, a lot of dark goo that devours people, the burning of witches and heretics, and torture porn. Very edgy overall.
Let's now talk about Isidro. I guess he might have been put in, so that Guts could have a disciple to teach, and at first he does train with him, but after Guts gets the Berserker armor, he stopped training him. On the boat Isidro mainly trained with the mustached guy. Sure he protects Casca, and fights alongside Guts in some battles, usually to offer cover, but again that's because the author planned the battle so that he might have something to do, we are discussing why the character was added to the party. As for personality, he is mainly comic relief alongside Puck, which now sits mainly on his head, instead of Guts' pocket. This also marks a change in Puck's personality as well. See in the Black Swordsman arc he was about 90% of the time Puck form and just 10% of the tine in chestnut form, but by the time they reach the infamous boat he is 30% of the time in chestnut form, 60% of the time in chestnut form, but with a thematic costume in order to make a joke and only 10% of the time regular Puck. Puck has degraded from curios and lovable character to a joke machine.
Farnese and Serpico are a bit better, Farnese's role is to take care of Casca, since Guts can't babysit her, and to learn magic while Serpico's role is to take care of Farnese. I think Farnese is an ok addition to the party, especially since someone has to babysit Casca, but Serpico's role is just to fight alongside Guts. Thankfully he is rarely used as a comic relief character, but honestly I would have preferred if it was either Serpico or Isidro with Guts, and not both of them.

Now we reach Falconia, Griffifth has been reborn, and the party meets the loli witch. Why do people generally dislike her? Well, I dislike her, because she is an exposition machine, because she is also a comic relief character and takes a lot of edge from Guts(more on that later). Even worse, we now have a second elf, which is 30% of the time a bitching machine, 10% of the time an exposition machine, 60% of the time a joke machine, alongside Puck, Isidro and the loli witch, Schierke. As you might have noticed if in the beginning there was only Puck to balance out the edge, now we have 4 characters, even though Guts has become more humane and less edgy, thus asking the question why do we even need so many comic relief characters? Guts then receives the Berserker armor, which is very, very edgy. Besides the edgy design, it makes you super strong, but your body will get damaged, you can't feel pain, if your bones break, the armor will enter through the flesh to solidify the bone, you can't distinguish friend from foe, and you will fight either until you wake up, or die from blood loss. However all the loli witch has to do is jump on his back and keep his eye open, thus he doesn't succumb to the edge. What was once an edgy armor, is now a strength boost. Oh and remember when Guts had PTSD the moment you touched him? Well now he has no problems giving piggy back rides to Schierke. Another important aspect is that now some of the characters received magic items, which while it did make them more useful and versatile, it also felt like a video game. The whole arc with the trolls and which house wasn't all that edgy, and at best a bit sad.

Then they reach the boat and now we have two more characters with him, the captain which hasn't done anything of worth, other than provide with a ship, and apparently is a competent ship captain, and the merchant who while at first, looked like a good schemer and maybe even tactician, is now ANOTHER comic relief character, that neither fights nor heals. They also reach an island and find one more comic relief character, the mermaid. From what I heard she will join the party so now we have not-so-edgy Guts, 6 comic relief characters(the two elves, Isidro, Schierke, the mercahnt, the mermaid), a retard, a babysitter, and two other uninteresting characters. The harbor-city and the island were hardly edgy, sure a lot of people died and many of them got transformed into demons, but compared to what we had in the black swordsman arc and the lost children arc, they barely count as edgy.

Also worth noting is how fast Guts now trusts people, if with Puck it took him weeks to accept as a companion, with Isidro, Farnese and Serpico he allowed them only so that they could take care of Casca, because he had no choice, he almost immediately trusts and likes the other characters such as Schierke and the captain. I get that this is character development, and that it shows how by staying with so many people he regained a bit of his lost humanity, but the problem is that Guts right now isn't even all that edgy, but we have so many comic relief characters that the tone has shifted from extreme edge to a light-hearted adventures with drops of edge. The problem is that the comic was sold on the edge aspect for a lot of people(even the Golden arc which was Guts' best moments in life had a lot of edge, such as being born from a dead mother, getting raped, killing your adopted father and so on. Who knows? Maybe they will all get killed, I don't know, but this is my analysis on why for so many people the moment they met the loli witch signified a decline.

Good summary. The problems you mentioned get ramped up after they reach the island. Maybe it's a prelude for them all getting killed, but that would be bare minimum "edgyness" and not enough to salvage the manga at this point. Miura should just end Berserk and start making another manga about magical little girls doing magical little girl things if that's all he wants to do now.

I just finished chapter 347, so now I can give my final thoughts on the characters and atmosphere of Berserk. Don't worry it won't be as long as the last wall of text, I hope.
Looking back, the pirates were goofy villains, that were never really a threat, even after becoming monsters, they almost felt like Team Rocket tier type of villains. I mean our heroes fhought them like four or five times(the most our heroes ever fought a villain, mind you) and they always lost, they were barely threating and they were mostly screaming and saying how they will get them next time.

After posting all that I did have some time to reflect on a few other things. First things first,the problem isn't that Guts has a JRPG party, I guess it's supposed to be reminiscent of the Golden Days, since there was also a party back then, but it was much more different from the one we have now. Back in the Band of the Hawks we had Casca the love interest, Rickert the young one, Pippin the big guy for you, Judeau the thief and Corkus the bitchy one. Remember when Judeau was juggling watermelons and singing? or when Pippin devoured all of the rations, because he was hungry? or when Ricket was masturbating to Casca taking a bath? or when Corkus dressed as a lady to sneak inside a fortress? No? Well that's because it never happened. they were more than just comic relief characters, sure there were some comedic situations with the characters, even involving Guts, like that time when Judeau opened the door, but Guts was in front of it so he fell in the water, then Guts climbed up, talked a bit to Judeau, but then Pippin opened the door and both Guts and Judeau fell in the water, they had dreams and ambitions, they weren't drawn with funny faces and they all knew the dangers of war. Most importantly they were all competent fighters that could kill a lot of men, unlike Puck, or the merchant, or Farnese.

Another bizarre change is that of the world of Berserk, in the Black Swordsman arc there were wars against heretics, and those that were captured were sentenced to death, people lived in poverty, it was always dark and gloomy and people barely smiled. Then we have the Lost Children who are children that wanted to escape the harsh life of adulthood and their abusive parents. They didn't want to grow up, but they also didn't mind killing others even other elves(it was all a game to them). Then we have the Black Tower were we see the inquisition torturing people, burning heretics, and finally killing them. If there was a heretic in a family, then the entire family, would be sentenced to death. So basically, people and especially priests, don't like demons or people who associate themselves with them. We also have the not-muslims who engage in heresy and demon breeding. We then reach the Millenium Falconia arc, in which Griffifth with his army of demons and humans kill the not-muslims and create an utopian paradise. Of course, now all of a sudden everybody is honky dory when it comes to demons, even the fucking pope. There is no uproar, there is no inquisition, everybody can live happily ever after with demons. It's as if, the KKK after years of hanging black people, would suddenly be ok with black and white marriages, just because one of the members happened to be black. It's retarded, and I am quite disappointed that the pope fell for his charms and didn't immediately denounce him as a heretic.

When Rickert reached Falconia, I was hoping that they would show us the darker of part of the city, like things aren't as they seem to be, like there is a dark hidden secret that maybe corrupts or kills people, but nope everything is perfect, the monsters mostly spend their time fighting in the colloseum against other monsters, so satisfy their bloodthirst. I was very happy when Ricket bitch-slapped Griffifth, and he escaped his city. Yeah I don't really like Griffith.

You know what the island reminded me of? The Lost children arc, but it's fine, because there is no dark secret here, only good and nice things. The worst sentence you can get, is cleaning duty. Oh and Guts is now laughing and smiling, yey, I guess the Berserker armor didn't take away all that much of his emotions, I'd say it had the opposite effect. To be fair though, the arc just started and now we are going to see Casca's deep memories and I am sure it's going to be edgy.

So what will happen next? I don't know, they will probably return after 10 years since time passes differently on the island, and Rickert will now be a badass swordfighter, or a badass mage that can build fancy weapons. I hope the big twist isn't that Guts will have to ally with Griffifth in order to fight The Evil One or whatever, and that if Guts kills Griffifth he will plunge the word in 10000 years of darkness ruled by demons, because Griffifth is the one who keeps everybody in check. It will be Naruto and Sasuke all over again.

One last thing, I really, really, really hate this smug bitch(pic related), and I hope she dies in the most painful way possible.
