The country's been run by a military junta since 2014. General Prayut Chan-o-cha runs the place for now, and has been formally endorsed by the King.

Basically Thailand goes through these phases. They elect a government which inevitably becomes corrupt as fuck and pisses off everyone who they aren't bribing to vote for them. Protests spiral out of control, the army intervenes and the government is replaced by a junta for a few years. Then the junta steps down, elections are held, go to start.

Thais rate military governments as more moral and less in thrall to business interests. Anyone who knows a soldier will know the set of values they tend to have. Basically the military acts like a highly traditionalist national caretaker and while they're in power you can expect stuff like this to be on the education agenda.
