So, is it going to go down as one of the greatest cartoons of all time?

So, is it going to go down as one of the greatest cartoons of all time?

No, because in a few years no one will remember and future generations will look at it and say "wow, that generation was dumb"

Yes. It feels like a spiritual successor to classic Simpsons and Spongebob

No. Its nice to look at in terms of design, but nothing special.

Anybody who says it is, is suffering from the drought of animation at the moment.

Ha! Keep dreaming. The animation is neat and some of the episodes are good, but on the whole once it ends no one is going to remember it beyond "that one weird cartoon that aired around Adventure Time".

And if Adventure Time DOES actually go down as "one of the greatest cartoons of all time", please someone mail me cyanide capsules because I have no desire to be part of a world that considers noodle-arm faux drama to be considered great

I'm willing to bet adventure time will be remembered as one the greatest cartoons of all time on IGN's top 100 cartoons of all time when IGN does that again

Design wise?

Yes, its an animator's wet dream, a mix of mediums, styles and what have you

otherwise its a forgettable early 2010s social media boom show, memes and all

I do like all the nice little animation easter eggs they have though, never expected a show to make a reference to the animated sequences from Pink Floyd's "The Wall", least of all a kids show

Too cutsy and European

Probably not. But it really is something special unlike anything else.

Jesus fuck man, thats a pretty bold statement to make, I never watched it past the first 2 seasons but it seemed like generic millennial trash too me, albeit with a slightly more unique artstyle (it still suffers from Potato Face)

Could we be witnessing the birth of delusional ravenous Gumball fanboyism jumping to defend generic garbage?

I just hope they can end it before CN truly starts to get its fingers in and we begin seeing lgbt characters and preachy one sided episodes.

Isn't that what makes a good cartoon? It's going to be remembered for how it pushed the limits in computer animation. And it's probably the only funny cartoon on Cartoon Network. As in it doesn't rely on non sequiturs and other hipster ironic humor.

Characters are still a random mishmash of things

No.
Of the decade, maybe. but that's because everything else now is shit.

They were originally based on a concept of rejected cartoons in a reform school for animation.

A good cartoon, sure.

One of the "greatest cartoons of all time"? Certainly not. It takes a lot more than a little bit of nifty animation for a cartoon to be considered "great". Consider subject matter: the episodes are not necessarily anything groundbreaking, they are simply gag-a-day episodes that, while entertaining, do not hold any significant value beyond raw entertainment. Or consider cohesion of individual elements, is there any rhyme or reason for characters like Tina and Robert and Carrie to all exist within the same universe beyond general medium mashing? Not particularly.

To be considered one of the "greatest cartoons of all time", a cartoon has to exhibit excellence in animation, in subject and in cohesion of characters and setting, to say nothing of the myriad of minor nameless details that must be executed well. The classic example of a "great cartoon" is Looney Tunes, but even then Looney Tunes as a whole is not considered great across the board (considering Loonatics Unleashed is technically Looney Tunes). "Greatest cartoons" are usually individual episodes, and to this end we turn to the classic "What's Opera, Doc?", commonly considered to be one of the penultimate examples of quality and greatness in animation as a whole.

The animation of "What's Opera, Doc?" is widely considered to be masterful, the plot is cohesive and understandable by almost anyone while still retaining a depth of culture found within opera (even when lightly lampooning it), and the "performance" of Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny are kept within their respective characters without ever openly making jokes at the setting or the characters (with the exception of the very last line of the cartoon, which rounds out the whole experience as it is kept fully in line with Bugs' character as we know him).

Can you say, when fully considering everything that you know about the show and ignoring as much fanboying as possible, that any individual episode of The Amazing World of Gumball is structurally cohesive and masterfully animated enough to stand up next to What's Opera, Doc?

I don't say this to mean that Gumball is bad. It's not bad. I just don't think Gumball, as it is now, can't be considered one of the "greatest" cartoons of all time.

TL;DR cartoons are shit and anime is superior.

Actually, Slav cartoons are superior to both. :)

...

4th wall jokes =/= groundbreaking. If you're going to go that route you might as well say that the episode of Chowder where they run out of funding was groundbreaking, since this scene is essentially an extension of that.

But seriously, if you want to put forward the idea that The Amazing World of Gumball is a groundbreaking cartoon that deserves to be considered one of the greatest of all time, then present an argument that goes beyond ">he doesn't think TAWoG is groundbreaking". I'm serious, I'm willing to listen to a genuine, well thought out argument as to why The Amazing World of Gumball should be considered great.

I don't think gumball is that great either, but this post reads like pretentious pseudo-intellectual garbage and I wouldn't be surprised if parts of it were copypasted from somewhere else.

No it's not. The run so low on budget that there's no actual animation gag has been done before and the 3d world gltiching the fuck out has been done before.

I agree it was a garbage attempt on my part to explain what a "great" cartoon is supposed to be, but I had to do something because without some parameters the argument would have essentially boiled down to "Gumball is one of the greatest cartoons of all time because I said so SO THERE".

And it wasn't copy pasted but I did read up on other animator's reviews of What's Opera, Doc? to build up the middle two paragraphs.

I wouldn't compare Gumball with What's Opera Doc. But I wouldn't cross it off as generic. While the first two seasons were somewhat mediocre. Season 3 and onwards really shined. The humor is refreshing as its more similar to classic Spongebob and Simpsons. You can argue it isn't better than them, but the spirit is definetly there. And the creative ways it uses its art style to tell stories is also too interesting to just call it generic. The question is how will it compare to other unique cartoons? There isn't a definite answer until time passes I'm afraid.

So apparently Darwin and Carrie are canon now

This thread is the closest to a gumball thread

I just decided to watch gumball for the first time, starting from ep 1 season 1
something i noticed in the first episode is that theres an incompetent(among other things) father figure, and the mother and little sister are competent; they also portray the two male kids as irresponsible

that got me thinking

just how many kids shows other than maybe new PPG are airing these days where theres a responsible, competent father figure in a children's cartoon who isn't a side character and isn't overshadowed or whatever by his wife?

Steven Universe surprisingly. Although I guess you could say he's overshadowed by the gems.

That actually sounds pretty cool

No, it's nowhere as popular as Holla Forums makes it out to be

Not anymore that TTGo is here at least.

It looks pretty entertaining, I'll give it a try.
The bit with Gumball walking in on the banana watching porn tickled me to no end

It's going to be remembered as that one cartoon that combined different types of artistic styles, stock photo environments, 3D renders, grinning potatoes, more detailed designs and so on into a coherent show. So animation autists will have a reason to remember it, as while not groundbreaking it's still particularly interesting and well-made, as for the rest, well, kids growing up on the current generation of CN cartoons will remember them fondly like you faggot express your nostalgia for Samurai Jack or whatever, but I don't think it will be something that will last enough for multiple generations to remember it.

At first I was gonna argue that he is incompetent, but then the more I thought about it I realized that all the characters, female or otherwise, have flaws. For a show with such blatant pandering to the sj crowd it really is well-rounded in it's writing and not stooping to the level of "hurrr man dumb stupid fat pig"

...

I just finished watching seasons 1-3 on kisscartoon, and an episode from 4by mistake

i think season 1 was the best of them, they were all pretty good, and quite a few of the episodes from season 2 and/or 3 just looked like it was trying to be an action cartoon than a humor cartoon

I also think its worth noting that only 3 or 4 episodes so far have any continuity at all in them, not including the episode about continuity, and that season 3 has quite alot of references to stuff in it

The problem with SU is so many that its impossible to list. But simply put: The characters are awful and the show doesn't treat them as awful.

They are selfish, narcissistic, and do the least amount of work possible. The show repeatedly rescues them from their unproactive mistakes with dues ex machina.

Its true SJW core is feelz over realz. Not lesbians. No other show I have watched had one character ask "Shouldn't we be working to save the world from apocalypse?" only to get "Well its equally as important to feel good".

No it isn't. No it isn't.

SU is only popular because fuck all is coming out. It would be quickly forgotten last decade and wouldn't make it past a season.

wait im not sure why i quoted
i meant i watched seasons 1-3 of gumball
ill watch the 4th later

Except Connie.

Ah.

The only character I find outright repugnant is Gumballs Dad. Yeah I get it Dads are dumb, and stupid, and terrible, and #yesallmen, but he just reaches a point where I just don't even want him onscreen anymore. He is such a repugnant pathetic character in a cast of generally nasty people.

And I always hate the trope that the mother is not responsible for the child getting a solid education. Like she outright calls Darwin and Gumball idiots. Hey bitch, their your children. Its YOUR fault as well. You don't particularly try hard.

I mean I know this is a character flaw, but its never framed as a flaw.

The man explained that he meant Gumball not SU.

he was talking about this post, not the one I replied to.

Imageboards are confusing and Im a dumbass.

and today i finished watching… every season 4 episode of gumball that I could find on kisscartoon

one of the episodes are really, really, really, really cringy, and overall i don't like how many references they're putting in the show, but its maybe as bad as it was in season 3
also theres some more continuity in season 4

Something weird happened between season 1 and the rest of the where Gumball got at least a little smarter and Nicole stopped being a supportive if demanding mom and turned into a horrible person and often literal monster.

In that episode where she calls Gumball an idiot, he ends up being the only one talking sense toward the end while she and that other mom fight about whose kids are better. I generally hate the family oriented episodes because the parents/children dynamic pisses me off. Richard is a completely worthless character from almost every aspect, Anais was a Mary Sue in season 1 and only works now she's shown to be extremely poorly adjusted socially to balance her out, episodes where Gumball does nothing but YELL ABOUT EVERYTHING need to stop.

The best show ever? Definitely not, and it's been incredibly hit or miss right from the start. Even now you'll get maybe a 3:5 ratio of solid gold episodes to pure garbage.
