He was a real big asshole to those students. I hate guys like that, they pretend they have no time for anyone else because they aren't good enough. Musicians are naturally gifted, having the drummers "practice" for hours until their hands bleed didn't benefit anyone but Fletcher's ego. Actual musician here. Music is not a fucking gift and you're a fully blown retard if you honestly believe that. For me, it's my rampant autism and work ethic, plus inspiration, like you said. I've been tapping on stuff my whole life, doesn't mean I ever held a beat before I LEARNED how to play the drums. If I was born gifted, why did I break all my drum heads trying to do blast beats when I first started? Why did it take me years to get my dynamics in check?

To answer OP's question, I would say he probably is a psychopath or sociopath of some sort. He told him 6am sharp, knowing he would get there when the class started. Then he acted all buddy-buddy with the protagonist just to find out some information he could use against him. Which he did after the "NOT QUITE MY TEMPO" part, calling him out for his mom walking out on him. Dude's a control freak, nonchalantly calling the original drummer an alternate like he was one all along. Fits of rage over minuscule details, 'hiding it' by being nice to some dude and his child (putting on the charm), then breaking the veil as soon as he's back with his pawns. Autists generally aren't great manipulators as they're bad at reading others. Meanwhile, a psychopath would know fully well he has no empathy, and could use that to his advantage. Even if he was just a fervent asshole, he wouldn't ask someone about their family just to use it against them 10 minutes later.
