Then they measured the distance to the Sun much the same way.

However, if the sun is closer to the Earth, sunlight doesn't arrive parallel and the shadows of sticks in different cities at the same time would not be the same even with a flat earth.

It was when they calculated the distance to the moon and then calculated the distance to the sun using simple geometry and math. It doesn't matter of sunlight isn't coming in parallel when you're approximating the circumference to the earth or approximating the distance to the sun.

We can do it today, when the moon is half full during daylight.
During a daytime half moon you can measure the angle between the direction of the moon and the direction of the sun and construct a triangle to find the ratio of the sun's distance to the moon's distance, because the line from the moon to the sun must be exactly perpendicular to the line from the moon to the observer.

Because they couldn't measure the important angle. What they were able to derive from the geometry is that it was obviously much further away than the moon, and much much larger than earth.

By the way, retard, the first attempt at estimating the distance was five million miles using this technique, which was obviously very inaccurate. But, by virtue of geometry, it's already very larger than earth at that estimation, and can't be part of your dumbfuck flat earth model. With accurate tools it only gets further and larger.
