It makes action scenes really easy to film because you don't have to coordinate a bunch of dudes to execute it perfectly with good timing, you just film some bodies rustling up close and the audio guys will figure it out so that it makes sense. In both the first reboot and Beyond there were instances of physical/kinetic damage bypassing shields completely.

In reboot 1, after the Enterprise leaves late for Vulcan, Pike gives the order to put shields up (while in warp no less). Yet when they arrive in the debris field caused by Nero's ambush, the debris goes straight through the shields and starts impacting the hull.
In Beyond, the swarm ships similarly bypass the shields.
Why Starfleet doesn't make use of this knowledge to develop a weapon that simply ignores enemy ships' primary defense mechanisms is a complete fucking mystery.

Well, I just watched it and it wasn't as bad as JJ's films. I wouldn't go so far as to call it good or real Star Trek but I felt like it tried and was a step in the right direction.
