By the first half of 1996, all of the major mass media, both electronic and print, were controlled either by oligarchs or the state. It waged an information war in favor of Yeltsin and against Zyuganov. It sent messages that if Zyuganov elected, Russia would be sent back to the days of Stalin's gulag, reinforced by long television documentaries about the Stalin era repressions. The media also implied that if Communists take the presidency, a coup d'état by Yeltsin and a civil war would follow.[2]

The tactics adopted by Chubais campaign team included cancellation of hotel reservations made by the Zyuganov campaign, issuing false invitations to Zyuganov press conferences with the wrong times, and the publication and distribution of fake extremist Communist programs.[2]

Bourgeois media and institutions do this constantly. They pretend to be objective but then will omit anything that makes Communism (or any different system really) look good and Capitalism look bad.

Why do you think you'd learn about this?
Capitalism has managed to present itself as open, free, truthful and non-ideological. Our education and media would never lie, and they especially wouldn't lie about how education and media lied in countries we don't like.

The truth is, propaganda here is and was just as strong as in the Soviet Union. Many people in eastern bloc countries got fed fake stories about the west not just from their governments, but from western radio aswell. You probably did learn about that, western radio stations operating on the iron curtain's border telling people about the freedoms and excesses of consumer goods in the west. But they never learned about homelessness, unemployment, crime, class division etc.
After the wall fell, eastern germans would come to experience homelessness for the first time. Imagine if you had lived all your life without it.

Just make sure you don't fall for conspiracies, there is no cabal here pulling the strings, just capitalist countries ensuring their preservation. Keep digging, there is much more to find. I found out recently that my country's secret services supported Pol Pot.

I always find this narrative to be totally illogical. If a movement or an ideology has 1) absolutely no support of the masses and is basically just enforced by an elite kabal (Jewish, if you are a Holla Forumstard) 2) imprisons half the population (which needs the other half to guard it I guess and 3) guarantees economically the worst outcomes one could think of, the why in the lords name did this very ideology managed to spawn over half the globe, won wars, has millions of people following it and thousands of intellectuals examining it? Like, these people think that absolute horrible ideas are totally just happening, because people are that dumb I guess.

The media always wants to have their cake and eat. On one hand, they want communism to be portrayed as a supervillian (hurr Kim is going to nuke NYC) but also as super incompetent (people just pretend to work etc). It doesn't seem to occur to them that these two narratives are utterly conflicting.

The CIA, by its own admission, gave $1 million to Italian "center parties".[10] and was accused of publishing forged letters in order to discredit the leaders of the Italian Communist Party.[11] The National Security Act of 1947, that made foreign covert operations possible, had been signed into law about six months earlier by the American President Harry S. "We had bags of money that we delivered to selected politicians, to defray their political expenses, their campaign expenses, for posters, for pamphlets," according to CIA operative F. Mark Wyatt.[12] In order to influence the election, the US agencies undertook a campaign of writing ten million letters, made numerous short-wave radio broadcasts and funded the publishing of books and articles, all of which warned the Italians of what was believed to be the consequences of a communist victory. Time Magazine backed the campaign and featured the Christian Democrat leader and Prime Minister Alcide De Gasperi on its cover and in its lead story on 19 April 1948.[6]

The PCI was being funded by the Soviet Union.[13] According to Wyatt. "The Communist Party of Italy was funded … by black bags of money directly out of the Soviet compound in Rome; and the Italian services were aware of this. As the elections approached, the amounts grew, and the estimates [are] that $8 million to $10 million a month actually went into the coffers of communism. Not necessarily completely to the party: Mr. Di Vittorio and labor was powerful, and certainly a lot went to him," according to the former CIA operative.[11] Although the numbers are disputed, there is evidence of some financial aid, described as occasional and modest,[14] from the Kremlin.[15] PCI official Pietro Secchia and Stalin discussed financial support.[16]

The Christian Democrats eventually won the 1948 election with 48% of the vote, and the FDP received 31%. The CIA's practice of influencing the political situation was repeated in every Italian election for at least the next 24 years.[12] A leftist coalition would not win a general election for the next 48 years, until 1996. That was partly because of Italians' traditional bent for conservatism and, even more importantly, the Cold War, with the US closely watching Italy, in their determination to maintain a vital NATO presence amidst the Mediterranean and retain the Yalta-agreed status quo of western Europe.[17]
